Vera Future? David Leon?

Can anyone tell me if Vera will go on to a third season? It is a wonderful crime/mystery/drama and I would love to see more episodes. Does Vera ever meet her half sister? Does Joe take over the series upon Vera's retirement (that would be awesome!)

As for Joe (David Leon) his private life is very private and can find hardly anything on him. Single. There are hints here and there that he is gay. What's the scoop there guys (and gals)? His married character doesn't run true for me although they did give him a very good looking (and appropriate) wife.

The one gripe I have about British shows like this is that they often chop off - Blue Murder, which had been going strong and was well liked, was simply shut down. Lewis is another. I was never a fan of Morse but Lewis I like and would love it if DS James Hathaway (James Whatley) was promoted to DI with a graceful retirement of Lewis. They could rename his series "Hathaway" and give him perhaps a female (DS) sidekick although I'd much prefer another male DS but this time it would be really cool if such a sidekick was (at first) closeted gay and by Season 3 can't stand it anymore and opens up about his sexuality. Hathaway would handle it well, of course and the two would make a great team with a lot of sexual tension... sorry, I digress.

What's the scoop on future versions of Vera? Is she done for the day? Two seasons, that's all we get?

From wikipedia:

In August 2012, Vera was renewed for a third series of 4 x 100 minute episodes with both Brenda Blethyn and David Leon returning for the new series.

That is good news!

What has being gay to do with anything?
Wanting for a fictional character to be gay is peculiar.
Who someone falls in love with has nothing to do with anything, as long as they are both consenting adults.

And I cant see how a person's sexuality will make them better at solving crimes.

Hi Jane. I'm assuming you are referring to my question about David Leon's private life. Most actors seek the limelight publicly and privately, especially heterosexual actors. When checking the main web sites dealing with who is dating who it seems David Leon is non-existant. There must be a reason for that and yes, it could be that he wants to keep his private life private. That leaves his sexuality suspect.

Wanting for a fictional character to be gay - in this case (Lewis) the writers for James Whatley have made it clear that Hathaway does not look down on or consider gay people "less than" (while Lewis did show some disdain for gay characters) and they have hinted that he experimented with his sexuality in his teen years. If they were to elevate the character to the position held by Lewis (DI) and renamed the series "Hathaway" a new DS would be expected. We've seen all the second bananas on the British shows from Scott & Bailey, the recent Broadchurch, Shetland, Vexed, etc and those have run the female gamut. The world has changed. The only people denying equality or insisting gay people remain in the closet are homophobic and generally religious zealots. Adding a gay male authority figure (DS) to a new series like "Hathaway" would surely give it a high profile - especially with good crime and mystery stories for the two leads to investigate and solve.

Another British show that would benefit from adding a gay Sargeant would be Midsomer Murders. It has been noted that Jason Hughes may opt out as Sgt Benjamin Jones and adding an openly gay Sargeant to work with Barnaby (Dudgeon) would be appealing.

You say - "Who someone falls in love with has nothing to do with anything, as long as they are both consenting adults..."

And I'm wondering why you said it but since you did - can you name me one British crime or mystery series which offers a respected openly gay respected authority figure who works in tandem with a straight male partner? The answer is you can't because British television is too fearful to go there. Do you seriously believe Morse would have ever been paired up with an openly gay partner? When gay characters are introduced they tend to be depraved with criminal intent, pedophiles or mentally disturbed - and that's just not the reality of gay people by any stretch of the imagination. Tim Cook, (CEO of Apple), Ian McKellan (famous actor) and thousands of other openly gay Americans are just as normal as you and me.

BTW, I'm still waiting for the third series of Vera. Has it ever been filmed and released? Does anyone know?

There is no such person as James Whatley. Hathaway is played by Laurence Fox, from a very well known acting family. Lewis is played by Kevin Whately. Fox departed to pursue a career in Hollywood and Lewis, at 63, is well past retirement age. Jason Hughes has also left Midsomer Murders.

As for the actual topic, Vera, my partner and I watched the first episode totally boring and we will not watch any more.

reply

You are very kind. 'Totally boring' is no how I would describe it.

I dropped by to see the ratings and I am appalled by them. I can safely say that British crime writing has died of political correctness and soap opera antics; time to move on.

To each his own! I LOVE Vera; and the characters are perfect. Very realistic and believable.

I hope there are a number more "Vera's" filmed. The writing is superb and the characters are intriguing. Yes, the pace is slow and the situations are convoluted, and, at times, dark! But, that is how police work actually progresses; in fits and starts.

Vera Stanhope is a complex character; it takes a while to get used to her. With her emotional shortcomings (rooted in her history of losing her mother, growing up with a distant father, and currently having an unreachable sister) combined with adult onset health problems, and her need for control, and her strength as a cop coupled with her weakness as a person, all contribute to her complexity as a person. And, that only proves what a marvelous actor Brenda Blethyn is; I have adored her since she was the long suffering wife, deeply in love with the recalcitrant "Roger" on Outside Edge.

Joe (David Leon) is a perfect foil for DSI Vera Stanhope. He handles his boss as best as he can, and their relationship works. He is younger and less experienced, yet he has been promoted and must find a way to deal with his very demanding, and very opinionated, and very female, boss. Vera treats him as an underling, and as a son; she isn't quite sure how to manage him, and their relationship is constantly tested. His wife is helpful and jokes that Vera is "his other woman" which helps to relieve the tension.

Not everyone watches every production; I can't stand Star Wars, Dr. Who, or "action flicks" of any kind! But, I don't wish them ill, and I don't wish them to end. That kind of "if I don't like it, it should be banned" nonsense is childish; extremely immature and ego-centric. "Live and let live" is a kinder, and more sophisticated, manner of dealing with life than "off with their heads!"

Camargue -
Thats a fine analysis of Vera, and I totally endorse it.
One of my favorite programs, & very different from what we have in the States.
I also agree with your "live and let live "approach to viewing -
For myself, I try to see you as much as I can of what interests me and improves my brain.
If don't like it, I simply don't watch it - I try not to let bitterness enter into it.
Thanks again.

New to the show...just finished S5 yesterday. Thought I'd scroll around the Board just to see what's what.

Anyway...

Just to let you know; I'm "borrowing" your perfectly-put paragraph.

Carmague, brooklynjm, and Tendrick, we're a club sharing exactly our views of Vera and what should happen with shows we don't like which is nothing, because other people like them.

The music on Vera is especially good, though they don't spend much on it and it's the same every episode, it's haunting and perfectly evokative of the themes and landscape of the show.

Insp. Lewis is played by Kevin Whately, to point out the bleedin' obvious...

Wow. My head is spinning. I have no idea what this thread was supposed to mean. Talk about confusing. Trolls do this on purpose I think. Really James Whatley? LOL!
