Characters Exits

Recently started watching the show and love it but I can't help but notice they handle characters leaving on this show really awkwardly. Like Whelan, who turns up in Season 2 for a couple of episodes and then just disappears. No one even even mentions her. She returns in season 5 like she's never been gone even though it's a few years later. Or Shep (her replacement) who isn't mentioned in season 5 (unlike Joe) and her departure is never explained at all. Billy was another one who they never explained. It's weird because Holly was the first character to leave and she actually had an exit but since then they don't even really mention it or care. They were all pretty likeable too.

It's a little thing I know but I think it's just really odd how they handle it. I wouldn't be surprised if Billy or Shep return next season without anyone saying anything about them being gone.

I was just coming here to write the same thing! I know actors leave to join other projects but then they could at least add one line of dialogue about what happened to the character. Only Holly, Joe and Bethany got exits, but no explanation of where Shep and Billy went. Shep's was particularly odd since it seemed she and the new pathologist were in a relationship so they could at least have given him a line where he says they broke up or something.

After trawling the internet a while ago I found a tweet from the actress who plays Shep saying she left to star in Home Fires, so I guess it all depends how long that series lasts.

I have a feeling she could return next season, in Whelan's role. Although they introduced that other cop (can't remember his name) a couple of episodes ago so who knows.

There do seem to be one or two characters holes missing among the group. Now you need another female detective. Then either a really good greenhorn or experienced transfer into the department. Maybe a character she takes under her wing like a daughter.

Cush Jumbo who played Bethany is now starring in American TV as a very sharp lawyer on the show "The Good Wife" with American accent and all. Very good role.

I just watched S1-5 back-to-back. What's the point of getting attached to characters when they're rotated through without fanfare! Joe leaving took the sweetness out of Vera. Those moments with them together were the highlights of the series. They spent time absorbing her into his family and since he got promoted she's all but forgotten by them. I don't like Joe's replacement- I'd be harder on him than Vera was!

Have to disagree with you :) I love love Joe's replacement. He's a very gentle and sweet character and he is one of the most handsome looking men I have ever seen on the screen. Maybe next James Bond??
