Beautiful skin

Brenda has the most luminous, beautiful complexion. I noticed this especially in Changing Tides. Must have had a facial before filming.

Gee, I never noticed her skin. Always look at how she's dressed & her hair. For a professional female in a male dominated profession, I think she dresses just awful. Her clothes look like old housedresses with a cardigan over it. I feel she'd look so much better in pants-suits or dress suits rather than the dresses she wears now. I know she's older & heavy but she still could look more professional with business clothes.

I believe it's supposed to be current times - right?

reply

I always thought her clothes--a bit messy, always wearing the coat--was a nod to an American tv show called Columbo. I think both detectives do it to put people at ease, and make suspects underestimate them.

I could be wrong.

But her clothes are frumpy. It is part of the character. A woman raised by a dad who literally was for the birds and no mum.

reply

I totally got the Columbo vibe as well! I don't think a woman has to wear high heels or dress smart to do a good job, and a lot of the terrain she covers can be pretty rough. I'm only on the first season right now but as far as I can see Vera is not your warm, friendly, grandmotherly type either. LOL! She's gruff and rough but she gets the job done. She's much more detailed and complicated than some detectives on TV and I like that. I think the cases are interesting and I can't say enough about how wonderful the setting is. The scenery is bleak and lonely but also beautiful and mysterious at the same time. A good match for Vera in my mind. I'm glad I found this show and can't wait to see what's ahead.

reply

She is dressed the way she is described in the books.

Boo hoo hoo, there are girls on my show. I'm taking my balls and going home

reply

Interesting! I haven't read the books, obviously, so I just had some thoughts of my own. I should check some of the books out of the library....

reply

She is supposed to be a wage earning policewoman, not a financial adviser.

I see what you mean about the facial.
I'm just now watching this episode premiering today on Acorn. Where did you see this episode? I have to wait for weekly new episodes. Happy with Acorn but would like to jump the queue.

RE CHANGING TIDES S5 Ep1: In the US New York City area, series 5 starts in two days but They actually showed this episode about two weeks ago. I saw it on one of my 3 local PBS channel, WLIW and now they're advertising the start of Season 5 for Saturday, 07/11.

I've just joined Acorn TV to re-watch all season four shows ( not very many shows per year !)- no wonder David Leon left to do more in other mediums. I just love his character in this series; he's the perfect foil for Vera. She's tough, brash & indelicate at times and he comes off as caring, careful & diplomatic. She calls everyone Pet or Love, but it's just to soften the harshness of her questions. Don't get me wrong - I love the show ( except for her wardrobe).

BTW, interesting comments about the raincoat that Columbo always wore. His was lightweight as he was in Californis & I believe he wore it to look extra frumpy. Her coat is heavier; you can tell; an all-weather one with a lining I presume. And, I presume she wears it to hide her figure as she walks around, climbs over stuff and peers into low hiding places. I'll give her 5 stars for all the walking she does in these episodes - usually at a fair pace. I know the scenes are edited & she probably walks a little bit at a time but there are some longer scenes with her striding around.

Five stars for walking... that's pretty good. Walking and talking scenes are a staple of our modern dramas. With the location shooting we're all just getting our money's worth.

As for long coats, I don't see them worn much in real life today but for contemporary TV detectives their shapeless, body concealing give the individual the look of a monk, a truth seeker. I always marveled at the long coats Mulder and Scully wore. I think it's a way to focus the viewer on the plot and to limit the distraction of body/wardrobe judgement.

If you've seen The Fall, Gillian Armstrong apparel becomes a part of the story. In many shows the long coat is like armor worn out in the world. Back at the office it's removed and they're vulnerable to backstabbing and front stabbing of supervisors and schemers

Curiously, Vera doesn't have office vulnerabilities since she operates without any interference from above. There's no scowling boss peering at her from a glass office at the far end of the set.(Don't get me started on the office sets that simply facilitate robotic cameras.)

Your comment about her walking around came off absolutely insulting. If that was what you were aiming for, it was a bull's eye. The truth is, that In Europe, most people think of walking or hiking as an amusing past time. When were were taking a leisurely mountain walk in the Alps, we would often be passed by much older hikers, and not all of them fit into the realm of "svelte." But they weren't winded or the least bit slow. We just consoled ourselves that the thin mountain air made us huff and puff some, but the truth is those people probably take that little jaunt up the mountain every day to keep fit and keep an eye on the birds and flora.

Vera--the character--has heart problems and gets around very well considering. But why you would think the actress had to film those scenes in little bits and pieces is beyond me.

Well, I reread the post, and I see it could be interpreted either way. I thought she meant that frumpy, older people couldn't possibly walk over that terrain and up and down those hills, when in fact, those were *exactly* the people we met on our hikes in Europe. My youngish hubby and I staggering up or down a hill only to meet couples looking just like BB effortlessly trundling up, down and all over the hills. It was a lesson in humility, let me tell you!

As a older lady her skin is beautiful as she is. Very talented actress

British women are noted for their lovely complexions. (Example: the Queen) With so little sun and all that dampness, no surprise here.

reply

So true that the British women have very fine, fresh looking skin.

reply

Yes, I agree - Brenda Blethyn does have beautiful skin. I notice she seems a bit more 'glammed' up in Series Six (make-up wise; her clothes are the same).

reply

yes, vera did seem more put together. i liked it.
