SPOILERS - question about after caretaker Edward assaults Florence

When Florence comes out the woods, she mentions Tom, the boy, to Robert, and Robert says (the twist), “There are no boys left, it’s just the 3 of us!” I assumed this meant that Tom was a ghost (of course) and that Maud was too; i.e the “3 of them” are Robert, Florence, and Edward. Then in to the final murder/suicide scene, I kept thinking that Maud was a ghost, while trying to kill Florence. But she’s not a ghost. She dies from the poison, as evidenced and referenced in the following scene.

Am I missing something? If not, what a blunder in the script!

I think when he said 'it's just the 3 of us' he meant Maud, Florence and himself. Maud was still alive at this point, and Edward didn't spend any time with them.

Florence also said she though she had killed Edward, so Robert probably wasn't counting him.

That was just bad writing IMO, trying to be cleaver like The Sixth Sense and failing. 5/10

Oh, that's a good question and one that I had not considered. I missed that, good call. I think Robert was simply counting those who were most active in the scenes or he was counting the three he assumed were alive, since she said she probably killed her attacker.

He didn't like Edward and Edward didn't spend any time with them, so he didn't count him.

Traditionally the caretaker doesn't live in the school. He has a hut of his own in the forest to keep off poachers and to look after the wild game. So when Robert says, "it's just 3 of us," he means "it's just 3 of us [LIVING IN THE SCHOOL BUILDING]." What Robert says is accurate.

Actually I thought he meant 'us' in terms of who was always at the school (even during breaks). Like there's the 3 of us on staff, no children...and you, who's a guest here. He interacted with Maude enough to know she's not a ghost.
