NY Times Office

How was Ned just able to walk into the NY Times office so easy at the beginning when he first met Felix? Was just any member of the public able to walk in their offices? Was there no security at all around?

reply

.
He rushed by and said very authoritatively that he was very late for an important meeting with Craig Claiborne, and nobody objected to that. There was security, but his statement made sense and was said very convincingly so no one stopped him.

Also, this was in 1981, not post-9/11.
