Why not have a gay guy play the lead? No gay quality actors?

Mark was good and all, but they could have given the work to gay actors...... Taylor's character too? I mean, is he gay in real life?

Tommy/Jim Parsons and Felix/Matt Bomer. Both gay

Ruffalo has a lot of Larry Kramer-ish qualities, and a physical resemblance. And he also has the temperament to carry off being blindingly angry without chasing people away from the screen, which is important for this piece. Plus, he's got the acting chops to carry it.

And finally, pragmatically, Ryan Murphy probably needed A Name to headline the cast, for purposes of funding and publicity. Maybe it shouldn't be that way, but it is.

I'm sure all those aspects of the casting took precedence over the actor's personal sexuality.

My own big casting question: why does Jonathan Groff get killed off early so often?!

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

Mark Ruffalo was incredible in this film and couldn't have been more convincingly in love with his onscreen boyfriend if he were actually gay.

Taylor Kitsch, maybe not as convincing, but that character is supposed to be deeply closeted, so it was appropriate for that character.

Besides them, many of the principal actors are gay in real life. Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons, Joe Mantello, BD Wong, Dennis O'Hare, Stephen Spinella, Jonathan Groff, the list goes on.
