I read Larry Kramer's book and

if I remember correctly Larry Kramer ( Ned Weeks in the film :Mark Ruffalo.) wasn't in a committed relationship then and still had a twinge of feelings (going back years) for Paul Popham (Bruce:Taylor Kitsch) who did not return them. He talked about never having that one great love back them when others he knew had several.

I thought that added to the anger Kramer gave the character when dealing with GMHC and the office of Mayor Ed Koch who he said was Gay and in the closet. The film had a very different Weeks with him being in a very loving relationship with an partner who has HIV. I didn't think it hurt the film but I just kept remember the anger Kramer had because of all that was going on and he having no one in his life.
