What happened to Nick's lover?

Was it ever explained what happened to Nick's lover Nino? His last two scenes were running to Ned's house with Nick in his arms and then sitting at Nick's funeral. He was never seen after that.

He died. Or moved away. Or his role was underwritten. Perhaps he went to stay with family.

It wasn't mentioned in the film, but Nino's real-life inspiration, Enno Poersch died of AIDS in 1990.
