Fire Island

Are there any gay men on this message board who frequented Fire Island in the late 70s/early 80s? I imagine it having been an amazing, freeing time, with terrific friends. Any stories you’d be willing to share would be strongly appreciated.

You might want to read the novel Dancer from the Dance (1978), by Andrew Holleran. Very beautifully written book, and very accurate.

Thanks for the tip, angelofvic. I'm actually trying to find a new book to read and am thinking this is it.

There's a photo book of Fire Island taken in the 70's by Tom Bianchi.

Another great book from this era "Borrowed Time: An AIDS Memoir" by Paul Monette, who was a published writer of fiction & poetry. He also wrote screenplays. I read it so many times by book fell apart. It's a true love story about how he cared for his life partner Roger Horwitz who died of AIDS in 1985. In trying to get information, care and drugs to help Roger, he had the same anger & disgust with the same people & groups (the President, CDC, Secretary of Health) that Kramer was mad at. Monette died of AIDS 10 years later in 1995.

And of course, there's Larry kramer's own novel, F*ggots.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.
