I think they did, because in the original "Snow White" story, the dwarves had no name. They were just known collectively as "the dwarves." The 1939 cartoon was the very first to give each of them names.
I was fine with the names the dwarves had in this film, because it suited them better. Silly as some of the fight scenes were, you gotta give these guys credit for their creativity and ingenuity in tricking people into thinking they were giants. It's not everyday you meet dwarves that have spring-loaded stilts that can rob people and get away with it.
