What is she doing with her voice?

I just can't figure out what her voice is supposed to sound like! This is not a complaint, I LOVE it and could listen to it all day but I'm not sure where it's coming from. The only thing I can come up with is that it just sounds heavy and sad and a little old fashioned. Is it a geographic or a period thing? Is it an accent? Can someone help me out here? It's driving me crazy!!

I'm pretty sure it's a time period thing. I sometimes watch older movies (from the 40s/50s) and most of the women I watch sound like that. It's like an old fashioned accent, basically.

Whatever it was, I really liked it. Kudos to her.

Yeah, her voice was perfect for the character. You could tell just by her voices and the way she spoke that she was from a different time. Blake really put in a huge amount of effort to authenticate the character

Seems to me like the use of the The Mid-Atlantic accent at times.

I can't quite put a finger on it as well, but Blake Lively does sound quite different here. It's supposed to reflect Adaline Bowman's old soul character, very calm and thoughtful. It reminded me of characters like Robin Wright's Claire Underwood and Anna Torv's Olivia Dunham in Fringe.

It reminds me a bit of Kim Novak's voice in "Vertigo".
