Did you know in some cultures the father must have sex first with his son's intended bride to prove that she is worthy? Besides intercourse is just shaking hands in a somewhat more intimate manner than just hand-to-hand.

What culture requires this?

So, you're thinking of moving there, are you??

No, funny guy, I'm just holding you accountable for your casual comment. Do you have any information to support your remark?

reply

I'm looking for it. I know it is somewhere around this cloud. 

Ok, thanks for looking. I'm always curious about social history and norms. ?

I don't know about Ellis. While watching, however, I was thinking how utterly bizarre it would have been for the father to watch his own son carry on relations with his great, long lost love from youth. That scenario, to me, would seem very painful. I know the Ford character is happily married to someone he loves deeply, but still....

reply

Yep, those are gonna be some awkward family dinners.

Plenty of them? It was pretty darn common in Medieval UK and Europe. There's also a lot of South American and African cultures that do the same thing. Have you never watched or read anything on anthropology? It was also very common, especially for the aristocracy, titled, and royal lines to get escorted to their rooms while a group of people watched the woman get deflowered. It was pretty common for bloody bed sheets to be displayed for all to see the new husband's prowess. Happened pretty commonly in Roman times as well. Lol.

reply

Also what would the mother think about the situation? Her daughter-in-law used to date her husband.

reply

To the ancient Hebrews and maybe the modern Orthodox Jews a father and son (or a brother--unless the brother was continuing his brother's blood line)having sex with the same woman was a serious sin and was considered close to having sex with you father or son.
Never heard of a society that encouraged or required a father to "try out" future daughter-in-law.

reply

The poster who said that -- that "some cultures let a father have sex with his son's intended bride" -- was a troll, and trying to be sensationalistic. I've NEVER heard of that, ever. Not even in cultures with royal incest (Ancient Egypt).

There IS a very old Jewish law in the Old Testament that says if a man dies, his wife can marry his brother -- but this dates from the Abrahamic era of polygamy. I've never heard of anyone doing in the recent historical past. But even so, brothers -- similar age siblings -- is not "your father having sex with your future wife".

The story here just skips over the very obvious problems that would arise in this family -- the aging wife would be jealous and hurt....the father (Harrison Ford) is clearly still in love with Adaline.....the son would probably start thinking "hmm, wonder what she was like when she was boinking my DAD?".....not only "awkward family dinners" but an awkward emotional situation for the next several decades and beyond.

I think it is one of the deep flaws in a story (that had great potential to be intriguing). I think the Harrison Ford character should have been the male protagonist's BOSS -- or mentor -- or next door neighbor. NOT HIS DAD. It makes the whole thing overly complicated when it could have been simple and direct.

Ha-ha, you reference my old comment from Oct 3rd. Yes, I admit that comment was not a serious one, I made it up simply in response to the absurd subject of the OP. Idiot viewers who come up with stuff like that deserve a nonsensical response and I gave one. Glad you noticed!! 

Um... you were actually right (almost) as I have saved such an article but since tried to save face with a lame excuse I won't bother!

reply

@LilyDale, I agree with you 100%. The film skipped the areas that had the potential for complexity, originality, and depth and instead opted for the predictable Hollywood romantic dramedy outcome.
