DS Annie Cabot

I've just started watching the first series of DCI Banks, and though the episodes are not as good as the books, it's decent TV. But I find DS Annie Cabot absolutely unbearable as a character: self-serving, harsh, cold, and not particularly bright. Does it (or she) get any better?

reply

Yes
Her character softens up and matures
But think she is smarter in the novels
"That's the beauty of argument, Joey...if you argue correctly, you are never wrong..."

reply

Yes. Give it time, because this is an excellent series with good long term character development.

I've seen them all and she doesn't really get any better. It's pretty obvious the programme-makers didn't think she coulf pull it off either and that's why they brought DI Helen Morten (Caroline Catz) as a more interesting and believable foil for Banks.

I'm new to the show. And simply started binge watching it. I do enjoy the storylines. But I agree with OP the Annie character is unbearable. I like the Helen character so much more as she is awkward yet precise. Why did they make Banks and Annie get involved..That took away from the seriousness of the drama.

what Jordie?

I think they got Banks and Cabot involved to show her naiveté and immaturity. Banks sees her stepping into the kind of trap his daughter might find herself in with a narcissistic barrister, who's a married man like David who cheats on his wife, but when that relationship blows up he settles on second best until he cheats again. As a more mature man, Banks knows young people have to see this through to its end because if you try to explain it to them they just dig in and stay in it longer to prove something. If she didn't have the baby he'd never likely been attracted to her from the get. No sense in a man his age & experience trying to work out her mess for her.

reply

Banks and Cabot clearly had feelings for each other before she had her baby. They just acted like stupid children by being "coy" and passive-aggressive and annoying instead of using their words to express their feelings.

To me, their whole drawn-out thing was just as unbearable as Annie's character in itself.

I have watching DCI Banks ever since our PBS station began to run it. I never liked DS Cabbot, always thought all she cared about herself. The original team with Ken and Winsome always seemed uncomfortable, I always chalked it up to having to work with Annie. I still don't like her and I think that she would sell Banks out in a second if it meant that she would be promoted. What kills me is that Banks got involved with her, figures that a nice guy would go for a user.

reply

No same man would tolerate a person like her working on his team let alone become involved with her. just an evil bitch out for herself with no regard for anyone but herself. Are UK women really so shallow and bitchy? I don't think so but the cop series always portray them as that way.

reply

This woman is a terrible choice as Annie Cabbot, but I guess she's adequate playing the role that the screenwriters have decided to assign to Annie. She is a much less one-dimensional character in the books.

reply

Yes, she is absolutely awful and totally unbelievable. As if Banks would want her as part of his team with her Vicky Pollard attitude and on top of that the actress who plays the character can't act. It'd be laughable if it didn't spoil an otherwise good tv series.

Could not agree more with everyones sentiments about her. I quit watching after she came back, barely making it that far.
