Don't care . . .

I liked it.....brings back a certain feel that speaks to people who grew up in the 70s for certain. Enjoyable, entertaining. Not an Oscar winner, but not every movie has to be.

It's my favorite film from the 2010's.

I don't think anything even comes close...

Didn't this movie feature a Rubik's Cube, an EIGHTIES toy?

Your post got me curious so I did a bit of digging.

The story in Super 8 takes place in 1979. According to Wiki, what came to be known as the Rubik's Cube was invented in 1974 in Hungary, but it was called the Magic Cube and it had not yet been released internationally. A deal with a toymaker was signed in September 1979 that resulted in it being renamed the Rubik's Cube and then released to the world at large in 1980.

So I'd say you're mostly right. The Rubik's Cube did exist during the year that the film takes place, but it's not likely that some kids in the midwestern United States would have had one. So its inclusion in the film is a bit anachronistic, by a hair.

Thank you for the research, PMX, but I really doubt that JJ Abrams gives a damn about accuracy, even if you do :)

I agree. It was fun to watch.

It's a good film, but it could possibly be remembered as a great film if it had a better third act.

I love the movie for the first 2/3 and then I feel like it kind of falls apart at the end. The story still makes sense, but it loses something. Honestly I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's probably just a sense that the answer to the mystery is not as compelling as it should be and it all feels fairly rote. It is as if the movie had a certain finite amount of magic to work with, and all this magic gets used up before the film is actually over and it's just running on fumes by the end.

I do enjoy it. I think it's a solidly GOOD sci-fi movie and Abrams does a good job of paying homage to Spielberg. But there's still just a feeling of it not quite living up to its potential.
