Roland's accent

Forgive me if this is a current thread but I'm wondering what everyone thinks about Roland's accent? Unfortunate Idris pulls off a great American accent otherwise a weird British/ American hybrid could've worked in my opinion. Do you think they'll change it or just his vocabulary?

reply

Well Elba is a lazy overrated actor who couldn't even be bothered to change his hair slightly to play Roland, so he'll probably be lazy and use his own accent while he puts in his predictably terrible performance.

Uh, Roland is described as having black hair with some grey in it...same as Idris Elba. What did you want him to do: don a wig?

Is Roland's hair length now a crucial aspect of his personality?

reply

The look of his hair, along with his eye colour, physical size and race are very well described in the books. Elba could have at least attempted to look different to every other part he's played if he insisted on ruining the Dark Tower with his presence.
He literally looks like he just walked on to set after a costume change (into a dodgy looking outfit) and that's it. Just lazy and shows lack of caring about getting any aspect right.

I would love to hear your expert barber's opinion on the importance of Roland Deschain's hair. Please elucidate while you simultaneously dig that hole you're standing in a little bit deeper.

Don't man...just don't give in to the trolls.

Give him popcorn. And the latest fast and the furious and he will stay away.

reply

Gracias for the advice. I only do this because this board isn't jumping with many other topics at the moment *and* on the slim chance he'll realize the flaw in his way of grumbling.

Yes, Matthew. That is a sentiment I can wholeheartedly agree with. We all play jumprope with our sanity from time to time (some more than others).

Coincidentally, King was and quite possibly still is of a similar opinion.

Funny but I don't remember reading that Roland had a badly shaved head in the books.

The only hole is the one you are in fool. There is not a single physical feature of Elba that is remotely a match to any description of Roland.
Now unless you have something to add then cease talking cr*p hypocrite.

reply

If you believe Elba can't act please enlighten the rest of us what your idea of a good actor is,for my money Elba is excellent in any role he takes he carried Pacific rim excudes confidence has gravitas out the wazoo

reply

He plays the same role in everything practically, has the same demeanour and his role in Pacific Rim could have been played by literally any actor who could give a big speech. Then there's his less than stellar performance in Ghost Rider 2 (where he failed miserably at a French accent) and Thor (the other part he shouldn't have got), where he showed as much personality as a tree.

One thing a good actor knows is when to not take a part if it doesn't suit them, something Elba clearly doesn't. And I hope that mistake brings his career down with it.

reply

When I was in college pursuing a degree in acting, the general consensus was, take any role offered, and change yourself to suit the role.

Just sayin'...

I don't know if you're aware of this but I've already changed things. I killed Ben Linus.

I don't remember how his accent was described in the books, if it was described at all. In my head he sounded American, somewhat Eastwoodesque (big surprise). Elba may go with something completely different though.

reply

My desire to hear Elba-Roland's accent has only intensified.
