Oh boy, Akiva Goldsman adapted the screenplay!?

The Akiva Goldsman who wrote such gems as :
- Batman Forever
- Batman & Robin
- Lost In Space
- I Robot,
- I am Legend
- A Winter's Tale
- The 5th Wave
- and more!

And I thought I was only in fear for this movie for the drastic changes to Roland and who knows who else atm. These are things I can probably get past if they at least get Mid World right and keep the major themes/motivations of the characters intact. But GEEZ, this guy has a terrible history of BUTCHERING screenplay adaptations. Like how far from the original material I am Legend and I, Robot were. Can we trust the sacred text of the Dark Tower series to this hack?

I'm still trying to remain hopeful for a full DT series, but more and more I'm worried about things, this the most recent item on my list. Maybe he'll surprise us and write his Magnum Opus Screenplay! No wonder all the changes were made, as Akiva thinks he can do things better than originally written.

I almost feel sorry for Idris at this point. If the movie fails everyone will blame him for being cast as Roland as the reason it under performs, but really, more than changes, it's the freakin' screen writer that'll make-or-break this.

This thread hasn't been made before.

Because I say so.

Oh the sarcasm is strong in this one! I'm sorry heisenfern. I should have checked with you before I made this post. I'll make sure ton consult you before I make another.

I went thru 5 pages to see if this subject had recently been brought up and didn't see anything related, but I'm only using the IMDB app and sometimes not everything comes up. Forgive my intrusion.

You missed a few;

= A Time to Kill
- A Beautiful Mind (for which he won a *beep* Oscar)
- Cinderella Man
- 19 episodes of Fringe (with an average IMDB rating of 8.6 but looks like you'd ignore his episodes rated 8.0 - 9.4 (18 of 19) and would list his lowest episode ranked at 6.9)

All of which have pretty good critical ratings. Pretty weird that you would skip those, it almost seems you are cherry-picking titles to prove your bias... but that couldn't be could it.

The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed...

reply

You can see it as cherry picking to 'prove my bias', but these films are those closest in genre to the Dark Tower. I'm not saying that these examples = the Dark Tower failing, just that it makes me worried that, on top of the many changes, he's gonna miss the mark. Perhaps he seems to do better with bio's? Of his Sci-Fi/Fantasy he doesn't seem to get things right.

You can say I'm bias all you want, but that doesn't make you right and me wrong because I'm not saying 'The DT series will be DOA because of Goldsman!!!'. Just sayin'

I can tell you for a FACT that Akivas script was ditched...

reply

For a FACT: The Most Recent draft is FROM Akiva Goldsmans Draft and therefore it was NOT Ditched. In A Articles it sais there was a psychologist involved and if you check the cast list you can se that the character as been cast.

reply

The akiva script was used as a base but had heavy rewrites by arcel.

reply

What are you thinking then? That Goldsman did the initial screenplay, then director Arcel and Anders Thomas Jensen turned it into the final product?

I checked Jensen out and saw that he did the screenplay for The Salvation, the revenge western with Mads Mikkelson. I actually enjoyed this movie very much. I'll have to check out more of his credits. That gives me more hope in the longevity of the series!

Oh boy! Another pointless rant about *beep* that nobody can change. "Poor writing, poor casting, blah blah blah. Let me whine about stuff because it's not being done THE WAY I WANT it to be."

The only people that will blame Idris, are people like you, that are secretly wanting the film to flop...just so you can blame them for casting a black Roland.

Make your own version, so I can complain about your choices.

reply

You got it wrong, dudeman. I don't want this film to flop at all. I want it to succeed so that all the material from the books is covered and the TV series gets several seasons to tell Roland's backstory. I like the idea of this version of the story picks up as the LAST time Roland must quest for the Tower. I like the idea that things will be slightly different this time. And the ONLY problem I have with Elba being cast as Roland is I'm not sure he can emote this type of character. I care less what his skin color is, as long as he can embody Roland's non-physical attributes. I would absolutely love to be wrong and be surprised when we finally get a glimpse of some film.

I think Akiva Goldsman can do fine with human centered dramas about real-life people. BUT when he adapts sci-fi/fantasy he seems to miss something that made the book or story as popular or enduring as they are. Why is expressing my concern akin to whining? I don't want to simply make frivolous posts complaining about all aspects of this films production. I want to genuinely discuss these things. Why can't you have a true conversation with instead of jumping down my throat for having an opinion? I'm open to hearing others thoughts, as a discussion may bring something to light I hadn't thought about. Perhaps you've discussed this with others already, but I haven't and the last I checked this is the place to do it.

Some of you are incredibly sensitive to opinions different from your own. Is that because there are so many trolls in these parts complaining about race and what not? Again, I want this film to do well enough we see the entire series on screen. I want it to be the best it can possibly be. Despite whatever qualms I have (and they are little things that won't stop me from seeing this opening night). But I still enjoy discussing facets of this film, positive or negative. I'm chomping at the bit for even a teaser. To bide my time I am rereading the books and looking for good conversation on this board. Am I asking for too much?

reply

And to reiterate, I never complained about Idris being cast. I did say I almost feel sorry for the guy because he will be blamed as the reason it doesn't do well when it will most likely be the screenplay that makes or breaks this. I may still be onthe fence about Elba playing Roland, but not because of his skin color, but because he has a different sort of dangerous about him than Roland as written did. I will be very happy if he knocks his part out of the park.

What is your point? I'm wrong for being worried Goldsman's script is going to miss some key components that make The Dark Tower special? I didn't say Goldsman = failure. And even tho I think these movies are lacking or missed something from the original source doesn't mean they aren't fun to watch sometimes. I don't want the Dark Tower series to become mindless entertainment. The books certainly weren't simple, mindless entertainment. It would be a shame if they are distilled down to simple stories.

Forgive me if I have reservation in Goldsman's ability to capture the qualities that make the books so good. But let's have a discussion instead of whatever it is you are doing. You really seem to be stuck in the thought I want these movies to fail or that I'm trolling.

reply

Hey, Storm! Trust me; I feel your pain. Some days I sit here telling myself, "Oh, my God, this is going to rock my world so hard!" then I get to thinking of all the ways it could go wrong and I'm Eeyore with the rain cloud over my head.

I'm sorry if you've answered this before in other strands (maybe even mine), but are there any key components you need for this movie to make you happy? Instead of worrying about what's not there, can you tell me what you're really hoping to see? I know you want a "right" Roland; I think we all want that. But what else are you going to be looking for from the creative team endeavoring to bring out beloved books to the big screen?

Hope you're having a good day! Mine is dreary (and not because of Dark Tower worries - stupid weather). :-/

reply

That is the flimsiest logic ever, he's wrote films better than someone who hasn't made any.
By that logic Uwe Boll could make this and by your dodgy criteria he'd be a good choice.

reply

Elba will deserve most of the blame, he should never have accepted a role that he didn't belong in. The blame and hatred he'll get when this fails will be hilarious.

Goldsman is still terrible and Arcel is still a useless nobody of a director but Elba will deserve all the hate and blame he'll get.
