The leaked trailer is...

...yikes. Not good.

I finally scrounged it up and watched it. I know there are some seriously hard core defenders of this movie on here, but you guys honestly think that trailer looks okay?

Look, I know the effects aren't finished and everything blah blah. But, even the leaked trailer is enough to sort of give an idea of what the movie is going to be like.

Not even from an adaptation standpoint, the movie just doesn't look good as a movie period. The trailer gave me The Seventh Son vibes.

A lot of you probably don't care about my two cents on the trailer. But I just wanted to throw them out there.

No, we're all being deceptive for [insert reason of choice here].

Wesker....

....come on man.

Can you give me your honest opinion of the trailer. And how any of that resembles the possibility of a good movie.

Wow, you're genuinely kind of creepy? You're keeping tabs on me?

And also calling me names.

So supporters of this movie are angry, SJW's who like to call people names. Cool good to know.

reply

You're keeping tabs on me?

You're on a public forum that isn't exactly hip-hopping with activity at the moment, so troll-like behavior tends to stand out pretty easily.

And also calling me names.

Asking people multiple times over if they are "honest" about being positive or at least neutral. Implication about character? Check.

Calling folks who take the time to explain their perspective on an adaptation another person entirely (after all, someone other than the script writer couldn't possibly be honest...right?).

Siding with a troll who asserts that "millions" of angry/racist black people are the problem in the United States.

You've earned it .

So supporters of this movie are angry, SJW's

Congrats on showing your own true colors. That didn't take long at all.

Instead of telling what we think makes it good..what makes it look bad to You? Besides the weird deathclaw thing it had Jake, Roland, the man in black ,The pink grapefruit, dutch hill,breakers,mid-world , part of the creed and possible tull. Little minute trailer isn't enough to flesh out how vast the world's are. So it did a solid job touching on little things. Also remember this is really only an introduction movie. They are playing castles if you will.

reply

Thanks for a lot of good points, Soul! And don't forget that a lot gets filmed that gets discarded before final cut, so they might have been experimenting with elements that won't end up being in the movie (or appearing in later installments should things go well). I can't tell you how many trailers I've seen before walking out of the movie and turning my husband to say, "Hey! We never saw *insert deleted scene here.*" My point is that a trailer, finished or unfinished, is hardly enough to tell us just how good this movie is going to be. For me, I saw that Jake looked good. Roland looked great. Walter looked great. There were things I never read in the books in the preview (like the Deathclaw), but that was also to be expected. I think they'll be able to draw newcomers to the series into seats with a finished product, and hopefully we'll get a lot of what we're more familiar with to give us that comfortable Mid-World feel when we go to see it.

reply

It's actually unfair for ppl to say trailers aren't conducive of their final films. Yes, there's times when films are better than their trailers and vice versa. But what are the point of trailers? To sell the movie.

My point is nothing to me in this trailer really pops. It looks like a middle road fantasy movie.

The way it's actually shot (not talking about the unfinished effects) is bland. Matthew looks comedic in all the wrong ways. Jake saying "his world needs saving" is the type of dialogue I was weary of with this movie. The CGI creature looks dumb. It's a dumb design. When are producers going to learn that the past 10 year trend of creating complex, dog looking monsters (like 10 cloverfield lane) never translates well to film. It's just so basic. Hate to use that word when talking about anything Dark Tower related.

I'm happy that you guys find this project interesting, but it is not working for me.

reply

Yeah, and I'm sincerely sorry it isn't working for you, Ruin. :-( To each their own, I suppose.

It's okay, though. A wise man once said, "...there are other worlds than these."

reply

You know back in 03 when i saw the trailer for the first Pirates movie I thought it looked like crap. But when I saw the actual movie it was amazing. Sometimes trailers just aren't made well. Or don't do the movie justice.

You are obviously right, but there's a weird phenomenon on this board where pretty much anything will do... They have decided to support this, regardless of all evidence. As you noticed, nothing about that trailer was related to Roland or Dark Tower. Just a huge cgi superhero movie.

That's not the case tyler, you're putting words in the mouths of those of us who are hopeful about the project when you frame it like that.

It's not that "anything will do." It's just that we're willing to give the changes they're making a chance. Do you not see the difference?

I don't know if you're aware of this but I've already changed things. I killed Ben Linus.

reply

Well there shouldn't be any changes in the first place. The Dark Tower was already ready for the screen. Instead if doing that, they have "rewritten" the story and made a superhero modern day action movie. Therefore people on here saying anything other than "what is this crap?" are ensuring they keep making crap like this instead of good movies. Instead of an intimate film for the fans, they have made generic cgi drivel, trying to not just make a bit of profit and do a good art film, but instead film every theatre and seat in the world with superhero videogame dummiest who are gonna.munch popcorn then forget what they "watched" upon leaving the theatres. Same as new star wars.

reply

Come on man do you really think the gunslinger which even some of the most loyal tower junkies skip would make money?
I too would personally love to see the story we read but for years and years now (Ron Howard was trying to make it before a beautiful mind.) The plan has been to have the horn of eld.
Now let me ask you this if Stephen king were to write another cycle with the horn do you think it would be an identical journey?

reply

Also let's think about wizard and wolves. You think they would be able to have doctor soon wielding light sabers and sneetches? Or going through wizard of oz type of thing would translate well?

reply

Yes, I believe that the gunslinger would translate well to film. That is what this is supposed to be, but instead they chose to make a cgi action film so they can fill seats. This film is being made for profit alone, just like all hollywood films, especially in the last fifteen years. It is obvious in their disregard for the plot and characters. It is common sense. If you saw pictures of this, you would never think it's dark tower. Just like if you saw the trailer. The first film should have cost almost nothing and depended on the strength of script and actors.... Not on cgi action set pieces.

So you've managed to get your hands on an advanced copy and have watched it months before release? Boy, I'd love to see that.

I don't know if you're aware of this but I've already changed things. I killed Ben Linus.

reply

Dark Tower needs to be an HBO show pure and simple.

Get Daniel Knauf to adapt The Gunslinger and you have gold.

reply

Well there shouldn't be any changes in the first place.

Expecting no changes in any kind of adaptation is lunacy. There's always going to be changes from page to screen, no matter how minor. And sometimes what's written on the page may be awesome in your head, and just doesn't pan out when translated to a visual medium, so a change might have to be made. Whatever the case, even before Elba was announced, I was ready for there to be changes. I'm willing to give this adaptation and the various changes a chance - it doesn't mean I'm going to accept them when I see it on the screen. I may absolutely hate it, I don't know. I won't know anything until it's actually on the screen.

they have "rewritten" the story and made a superhero modern day action movie.

These are just assumptions you're making based on your previous bad experiences at the cinema. I know, Hollywood has messed up many properties, and there is a good chance they could severely mess this up. But we can't possibly understand the content of a 2 1/2 hour movie from the 2 minutes of a trailer. The American had a trailer that made it look like a Bond-style action flick, it ended up being an extremely thoughtful European-style, slow-burn thriller.

Therefore people on here saying anything other than "what is this crap?" are ensuring they keep making crap like this instead of good movies.

NOTHING YOU WRITE ON THIS BOARD IS GOING TO CHANGE ANYTHING HOLLYWOOD DOES. Do you REALLY think you have a chance of changing things by posting your thoughts on an obscure movie discussion board???

Instead of an intimate film for the fans, they have made generic cgi drivel, trying to not just make a bit of profit and do a good art film, but instead film every theatre and seat in the world with superhero videogame dummiest who are gonna.munch popcorn then forget what they "watched" upon leaving the theatres.

Ooorrrr... maybe it's just possible they created a middle of the road type film that balances the intimacy some fans want with some of the action from the other books in order to maximize franchise potential...? Dude, think about it, they need to get butts in the seat, and they need to please fans. No they're not going to please everybody, there's no possible way they can do that, but they might just be going for a cross-section, where there are intimate quiet moments and then moments of violence - *gasp* just like the books...?!?!?!?!

Once again, we don't know. We WON'T KNOW UNTIL THE MOVIE IS OUT.

I don't know if you're aware of this but I've already changed things. I killed Ben Linus.

reply

Nope.

reply

Man, I totally feel you. I'm still on the fence... I want this to be good but I can't help but feel like it just looks and sounds off somehow? Like, maybe they're using pieces of the books and turning it into a new story, but I'm afraid it's going to become the Dark Tower or The Gunslinger in name only. Or mostly. And I almost feel cheated by that idea. There is an amazing story that would be so awesome to see in a movie format, but...

I'm trying to hold out and keep some hope that it'll blow me away. It was just an unfinished trailer, but Ialmost agree that this trailer almost makes it look like a SyFy Channel production Friday night movie. We shall see... it's also scary that Sony has done next to 0 promotion and here it is almost November!? What's with that? I'm beginning to feel that they are disappointed in this and are just going to let it become another meh King film adaptation. Maybe better production than the recent Cell adaptation, but will the story hold up on it's own and as it's own thing? Man, am I nervous over this.

reply

Why so much hemming and hawing?

If you want to go and see it, see it. If you don't want to see it, don't see it. Either way, the film will not be retroactively altering the books you have enjoyed up to this moment*. I suppose my point is that while it's alright to have concerns over aspects of a piece of entertainment, stressing out over it too much is the opposite of healthy .

* That said...regardless of the outcome, you can bet it will draw new fans to the franchise.

reply

As to 'why', Cap, I think I spelled it out. But I'm not being obtuse. I'm going to see it and no matter what I think, I'm sure I will enjoy it on some level. Be that as it may, I still understand others frustration here. I can sympathize. I doubt anyone who is a DT fan who is just totally positive over this adaptation. I admire their spirit, but I wonder as to why, with all the various issues brought up a thousand times, they were never at a point themselves where they went 'wtf, mate!?'

If you are that positive, I'm not knockin' you. True, the books remain intact and this film adaptation (and what follows) are a sequel to the books. But you never felt, even for a second, a little frustration that we're not going to see the books come to life?

I mean, now that it's a sequel, Sony has cart blanche to do whatever they want with the series. Does that not scare you a little? If it were another studio, I wouldn't think on it much (and believe me, I'm not loosing sleep over this), but Sony has had a bad history lately of giving 0 *beep* for their films of a fan culture nature. The leak a couple years back showed how much they care for the stories. It's all about dollars, Cap. So you really feel nice and comfy with them being at the helm?

Remember, I'm not knockin you, just having trouble closing the diahrea valve, ha. To reiterate, I'm sure I'll enjoy this film despite the thoughts and opinion I have expressed. I totally get the general frustration around here and try to understand some of those rather outspoken individuals. I get it, from both sides. That's where I'm at, anyway.
