The Dark Tower postponed til summer

Apparently due to VFX not being completed in time and to help promote the damn thing. I think everyone here saw this coming

Good sign? Bad sign?

Tom Taylor has confirmed that there will be no reshoots. Arcel usually shoots a ton of material and that's probably one reason for the delay.

Sad for us fans of course who have been waiting for this since the project has finally been greenlit, but hey, there's definitely a (very) bright side to this. In the long run it's a great sign for at least 2 reasons. No fúcking way they would move this to summer time if they weren't sure that the film holds promise and could do well at the box office. February is usually one of the toughest months to attract viewers and the fact that they're actually giving "The Dark Tower" a summer release could definitely mean that they have confidence in the film and the people working on it right now. And why wouldn't they, I'm pretty sure what the studio has seen so far looks absolutely terrific! Even with a black Roland, so sorry haters. I'm positive that this will kick off a big franchise!

Secondly, they decided not to rush the filmmakers during post-production and give them the time they have asked for to have "The Dark Tower" look the way they want to and give the director time to realize his vision. Arcel is known for working miracles in post-production, it seems that the studio gives him the time he needs to add the finishing touches rather than rushing it and have it released as quickly as possible. Let's be honest, February seemed way too early to begin with.

Hey Sawyer, love the enthusiasm in your post! I don't have much knowledge on Arcel and his style, but your post is giving that much more hope that, despite all the potential negatives and the fact this is a sequel (and of course, a 'black Roland' as a negative to many), this is going to be a well thought out and delivered film adaptation.

I know there are a few negative nancies who think you, me, Jo, Wesker, Wolf, and others are overly positive SJW's, but we all see reasons why this movie could really work. I would have preferred a faithful adaptation straight from the books, but when has there ever been such an adaptation? There are always reasons haters attach to and harp on to 'prove' why blank movie sucks. But why is it a bad thing to hope for the best? I'd rather see some adaptation of the Dark Tower than none. And if it ends up being a bad movie, so be it. At least someone is trying.

Anyway, I also see it as an act of faith on Sony's part to move DT to the summer. It will have some stiff competition, but so what? Let it sink or swim on it's own merits. But I'm feeling good about it at this point and I can't wait to see more of the look and feel of it thru a finished trailer.

Is this not a beneficial turn of events? Folks were worrying that a February release meant that the studio lacked confidence in the "product".

Yeah, we had been talking about this the last few days, actually. The possibility and what it means. Making me think that Sony leaked their own trailer to gauge reaction and found it wanting. Not that Idont believe VFX were also a factor.

Who knows yet if it's good or bad, but I think summer is a better release time anyway. Maybe they're using this opportunity to tune things for the better? Still nervous, tho. Ha.

Called that ish from a mile away.

If they need to finish the effects and get the marketing machine up and running, that's what they need to do.

It's a good sign, I just hope the film doesn't drown in the middle of all the huge summer films.

We all saw this coming...... What a bummer! Well at least they will get it right. Between my love for The Dark Tower and Tool I have the patience of Buddhist Monk.

TOOL are The Dark Tower of Bands. Hahaha

There are lots of worrying film delays that suggest problems, but this isn't one of them. They were genuinely overambitious trying to get the thing ready by February, and also, the fact that they're releasing it in the summer suggests they're confident it can hold its own against Marvel and all the rest.

Or they already know it will bomb big time and think it's preferable to blame the competition than the quality of the movie itself.

reply

What kind of logic is that? Sony is a business and they want this to make a profit if at all possible. As such, why would they move its release date to coincide with some big summer blockbusters(the Spider-man reboot and the Planet of the Apes sequel) and give it more competition than it already had? Wouldn't that further cut into what little(if any) profit you seem to think they'll make off of it?

If anything, purposely giving the movie more competition would indicate they have a LOT of confidence in their product NOT the other way around.

Well, there haven't been many bona-fide non-superhero summer blockbusters the past couple of years. As such, maybe they aren't that concerned with the competition during the traditional movie-going months. I loved most of the books, and might go to see the movie if it has good word of mouth from people I know and trust after it opens.
