Just saw the leaked trailer

I was trying to stay positive about the movie but thats gone now.

It looks like Jake is the main character in the movie and that they are trying to target the movie at the YA market.

Like I said, i was trying to stay postitive and tried to think it was a good idea to show a new cycle but, as fans hate it when Hollywood deviates from source material, it seems like they are only using that as an excuse to gut the story and make it as kid friendly as possilbe.

reply

This hurts.

Hollywood has pleased so many fanboys of various franchises recently. Marvel, DC, Harry potter, Hunger Games etc etc

The Dark Tower was always my thing and it's the one thing they decide to butcher to the point where... I seriously can't think of another adaptation that's made so many blatant changes.

It's like setting Harry potter in New York instead of Hogwarts. WTF man..

reply

I feel ya. If this series was handled correctly, with all the connecting stories they could have created a cinematic universe that rivalled marvel's.

reply

Where did this tool come from?

reply

I don't know who you're calling a tool, but why do you have to come here and insult people

reply

Tool?

What the f-ck are you other than some boring ass poster with the personality of a cardboard box going around this forum crying about Tyler and anyone else who isn't as blindly excited as you are for this movie adaptation?

I saw your thread, something like 'Wah wah you people ruined Dark Tower for me wah wah negativity."

You're a little bitch.

reply

The Dark Tower was always "your thing"?
Did you recently decide to leave the Hunger Games board and decide that The Dark Tower is now "your thing"?.....or were you being serious?

reply

You condescend with all the creativity and intelligence of a socially retarded 14 year old. If you can't handle a poster like Tyler then how stupid are you provoking a poster like me?

reply

Also, where'd you see the leaked trailer?

reply

Through a dropbox link on reddit. Its the unfinished one that came out a month or so ago. Still has some green screens in it.

reply

Found it.

That actor playing Jake seems pretty damned terrible but other than that it seems a little better than what I was beginning to expect. The changes still hurt but if it can tell a good story and tell it well, one that in some way does the source material justice, I wont find Akiva and beat him to death with a sandalwood grip.

reply

Damn man, the end of your comment made me crack up.

reply

It would have been easier and cheaper to do the first book properly, instead of this Hunger Games modern world stuff. Not really understanding how this is supposed to work considering they still want the t.v. show. I assumed first novel first film, made for the actual fans, maybe small theatre release, followed by 2 seasons of HBO which would bring in more fans without needing to compromise. This is Sony, they probably weren't familiar with the project, and now they aren't even promoting it.

reply

Tyler discusses something for once!? I guess you only wanna talk it thru when a poster uses Hunger Games and such as examples of how bad this will be. I never said the movie is going to be awesome and we should love it no matter what! I just said... maybe we can wait and see?

It still has an R rating, right? Doesn't that immediately remove it from the PG13 crowd? I mean, sure they can sneak in, but it's still R. If they had changed it to PG13 on top of everything else I'd be upset.

Perhaps Sony leaked the trailer as a feeler. Perhaps this is the final trailer sans effects. And the movie may suck. But maybe it'll still be entertaining, we don't know yet.

But this is all a matter of opinion, not fact.

I want to bring up how you all sound like O.J. lovers, that you'd have given him a non-guilty verdict. But that's tYler's bag.

reply

Is the R rating confirmed? Maybe there is hope.

reply

If they confirm an R rating, I will be pleased, though it isn't necessary, as this is supposed to be an adventure movie. Also, there is only one modern example of an R rating being as profitable, and without having watched it (deadpool), I can only assume it was basically 14 year old boy humour with cursing. This wouldn't have that. Therefore unless Roland pulls out his pecker and says the F word, it will be PG13 in U.S.A. Remember, in the U.S. violence is okay, but not nudity or swearing.

reply

Roland's shenanigans in Tull alone would be enough to warrant an R rating.

reply

A movie with a child as a main character doesn't have to be for the YA market.

However, what popped my bubble was when it showed that the movie is not taking place in Midworld.

Other than disappointment, I don't really care now.

reply

The unfinished trailer heavily relied on Jake's point of view, but that hardly means he's the main character. Furthermore, they showed a few scenes in New York (from which Jake hails), but they showed him arriving in Midworld, they showed Walter in Midworld, they showed Roland with Jake in Midworld, and they showed a town which was presumably Tull... How does it not take place in Midworld? It doesn't *only* take place in Midworld, but the Dark Tower never did.

reply

It doesn't *only* take place in Midworld, but the Dark Tower never did.

You mean except for the entire first book, right?

reply

⬆⬆⬆
Trailer looks closer to Matthew Broderick in War Games than any Steven King book.

reply

I thought you guys were already clued in to the fact that this film isn't a 1:1 reproduction of The Gunslinger. Try to keep up .

It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing .

reply

What's that got to do with someone claiming that there was never a Dark Tower that was set *only* in Midworld?

reply

You misunderstood: I said The Dark Tower never was. The Dark Tower as a whole. But perhaps the fault was my own for not being concise enough for you? Anyway, the first book was set in Midworld, yes, but as the Captain mentioned, this isn't a straight up, scene by scene adaptation. Besides, if I recall correctly, Jake was hypnotized and brought back to New York. That would have called for a New York set flashback if nothing else.

What other film has a kid and isn't for kids?

What other film has a kid and isn't for kids?
Léon: The Professional
Frailty
Running Scared (2006)
Hostage
The Shining
IT
Firestarter
Cujo
The Sixth Sense
The Ring
The Omen
The Exorcist
Poltergeist
The Conjuring
The Babadook
Let the Right One In

And...

As suggested by lynxx55: Pan's Labyrinth
As suggested by tinasparklesau: We Need to Talk About Kevin

...And several more. These are just off the top of my head. Long story short, there are plenty of movies with kids as main characters that aren't for kids.

reply

With kid, but not for kids: Please add Pan's Labryinth.

reply

Got it. :)

add We need to talk about Kevin

Added. :)

Does such a film need to feature an adolescent protagonist?

No, not necessarily, especially if we're talking about films like The Good Son and Children of the Corn. :)

reply

Au revoir les enfants

28 Days Later.
Short Cuts.
The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc.
The Purge.
War of the Worlds (2005) toes the line, as it's a hard PG-13.
