With the movie being delayed until July, i caved and read the script. It's far from perfect, and has obviously been reworked several times since the Goldsman/Pinkner draft which is the one i'm referring to but i liked it! For others that have read it and/or people that don't mind spoilers, i have many questions about it and their take on it.
To start, Tirana isn't mentioned but is rumoured to have a large role in the film. As she's not mentioned at all, i wonder where she fits in now. And TULL (yay!), but there's no Allie, Nort or Sylvia in the cast... Have they written Tull out now, or are they keeping certain characters 'under wraps' for now?
You haven't read the actual script. What we will see is not that. That's why you just spotted things that don't connect with what we've seen or read about the actual production. Go on now and finish connecting the dots. Look at the rest of the evidence and THEN decide what you think.
Do you mean that this script has been so reworked, that it doesn't resemble the current one at all and has been overhauled completely? The leaked trailer looked like they had at least kept the bones of it. I'm iffy on Tull as it was almost an entire act, so yep that looks like a huge rewrite entirely, but the rest... not so sure. Is this a calculated guess tyler, or do you know more than you're letting on? I'd hate to think i just read some bs fanfic and enjoyed it enough to give it a thumbs up for the movie *crawls into a hole and dies of embarrassment*. At least i wouldn't be alone in bagging Goldsman if a fan can produce something better than he can!
Im still betting it was exaggerated how big if a role tirana is gonna be. For awhile now i have been saying they will probably get rid of tull in exchange for the little sisters of eluria. And your right it certainly needed a rewrite but the core is good. Familiar yet different like i would expect from a new cycle.
And that ending WOW! It made so much sense he had to kill jake to get back on the path of the beam. I really hope they dont change the ending its perfect for both wrapping uo that story and opening up to the universe of midworld.
I'd be inclined to agree about Tirana, Abbey Lee had some media on her after Mad Max, so good (though false) marketing you think?
I thought they wrote Tull quite well, major disappointment if it's cut but oh well, the little sisters of eluria will be fresh for me as i've only read the 8 official DT novels. I'm aware of vampires and a love interest there (maybe it's to help 'soften' Roland's character as he's kinda a TOTAL assh*le in the script lol), but are some of their names in the cast list? There's a lot of uncredited 'vampires'... I think it's been established that Winnick is Jake's mum, but sister Jenna could be a possibility if they were going there. We do have the 'twinners' angle if necessary.
The ending has a big impact! Shooting Jake instead of just dropping him is so much more personal and gut wrenching. Shooting your little 14yr old bud that's been begging for a chance the entire movie? *gobsmacked*. I'm seeing an R rating heading it's way! I like how they tied in the line "There are other worlds than these" there too. What i also liked about this ending was that not only is it a great cliffhanger - sequels please!! But it does pave the way for a fairly close adaptation straight into Drawing of the three.
I can see that this is a necessary introduction for a broader audience, and i honestly don't mind the mashup as i've been thinking for a while that this is more like a reimagining than a sequel. I can see (if the rewrites have improved this), this could result in 3 films - the next a close adaptation of tdott and the quest, and the 3rd being the finale. Good news that w&g will already be covered in a tv series.
I hope they've reworked Jake, damn he comes across cheesy sometimes. SO reminiscent of Edward Furlong talking to Arnie in T2 - "Roland put your guns away, you can't kill people here. dick!" = "promise me you won't kill anyone! They'll live. dick!" (someone please fix this dialogue).
The fat tony scene was good too! I would have preferred the weird Mort element, but it still works.
Interesting that Roland encounters the lobstrocities, but it looks like Roland still has all his fingers? But Roland missing shots? NO WAY. He's injured from them on his torso too though so maybe that's where the infection sets in (easy to disguise in his duster i suppose).
Roland does his own tarots? I'll buy it! It takes away an iconic scene, but i like how Roland keeps drawing Eddie and Susannah and of course THE BOY. But where the heck is The Pusher? Though i don't see fat tony in the cast, so i'm guessing that has been reworked too, we kind of need Mort more for O/Detta's arc really anyways.
I love Jackie Earle Haley, and this looks like a good casting choice for him.
*Already knowing that Idris is Roland, it's surprisingly easy to visualise him as such in the script. I wonder if the detractors would be more optimistic if they read this script? It looks like an early draft, but Arcel and Jensen both have a good body of work behind them. They wouldn't rework it to make it worse?!
I think the only thing that really bothers me is that Roland isn't on his quest for The Tower. WHAT THE F? But ok... I'll go out on a limb and defend this decision - With Roland having the horn this time, there's some deep seated memory of everything he lost in the previous loop/s. He has given up and now only seeks revenge on Walter, understanding the quest for the tower is futile and will destroy his soul and ka-tet on a subconscious level.
Oh and MM is going to nail Walter, Walter is actually a bit more RF in this script and i think that works perfectly for MM's acting.
Crap if Roland Shoots Jake non readers are going to hate him. It would be a ballsy move. But i'd hate my for my favorite fictional character to get a bad rap the world over.
ballsy but good imo if it slaps an R on it and steers it away from the YA market. Jake pretty much volunteers to sacrifice himself, and it feels like he knows he will be drawn again. I think it could work if the audience is aware of this... Hopefully Arcel and Jensen make this clear.
Well they way the make him have to shoot him wont have the masses hating him like they would if he let gim die as in the books. Its a very noble death but absolutely perfect.
Yeah, it's more of a mercy killing, and serves to put Roland back on the path of the beam which Jake wanted. Really liking Roland is a slow burn in the books for me, but the end of the script shows his humanity in a bitter sweet way. Did you find the Susan flashbacks messy? I think non-readers will just be confused by them.
I found the lobstrosities messy and could do without it. I think if they juat touch on susan it will be ok. Maybe a few times so when the series comes out it will make sense.
Yes, you did give a warning :) . My curiosity always gets the best of me. 10 Cloverfield Lane was the last movie I accidentally spoiled for myself by diving too deep.
