It worries me that Eddie and Odetta are not in the cast list.
Do not worry, because it has been confirmed that they will appear in a sequel. Given that the first film mirrors The Gunslinger in many ways, it makes sense that it would not include them. Besides which...audiences have to learn about Roland, Jake, Walter, the titular tower and All-World in the initial installment. I'd rather Eddie and Suze be given time that does not have to be shared with introductory exposition.
In your opinion are the later books better than the second? I struggled a little with the first book but the second has really got me hooked.
The Drawing of the Three is hands down my most favorite book in the franchise. The Waste Lands is good, but not quite as overall dynamic from start to finish. Wizard and Glass was a book I did not fully appreciate the first time I read it, but I later came to realize it's true value after many years of accrued life experience and a re-read.
I plan on having all of the books done before this movie comes out.
That is a wise course of action . --- It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing .

I must say that I am disappointed that you like the Drawing of the Three the best as it indicates the books have peaked!
They are by no means terrible or even mediocre. It is just that TDOTT really clicked with me for various reasons outside of fulfilling its role in the The Dark Tower series.

I absolutely agree with Drawing of three being the best book in the series. However this does not mean the other ones are not great. We are still talking King here. Even his worst books are among the better literature. And the dark tower (as a whole) is still among his very best.
I do think that the last two are the weakest, still very intriguing stories. But in my opinion there is a certain storyline King should not have included.
...but they hung him anyway. Hanged, Ami. Your father was not a tapestry. reply share
I am listening to the audio book on Audible as I have no time to read these days. I find that I can get through a whole book in about a week listening to it on my drive to and from work everyday. (2 hours in total each day).
It's says it is the unabridged version so I assume it is the original.
In my opinion, the series takes a nosedive after book 4. There are some really great parts in WotC (5) though, but 6 (SoS) leaves a lot to be desired; 7 (TDT) ends exactly as it should but the journey to get there was painful.
My order of favorite to least is: 4, 1 (original), 3, 2, 5, 7, 6.
I think I would have liked to see this filmed series start at 4. It would have made a lot of sense from a storytelling perspective I think, as flashbacks are great in reading but can be difficult to translate to screen, and it provides a ton of motivations for the main characters - why they are they way they are; why they do the things they do, and how they mirror past and future characters.
I, too, am a huge W&G fan. I've said it before, but I'll say it again; its my favorite book of all time. So much love. So at least I don't think the books have peaked. I do so love DotT, though. I've actually (FINALLY!) started the series over again and can't wait. I've read the first 4 twice and the latter 3 only once, but it's been over a decade since I last spent time with my gunslingers so I'm really enjoying dipping my toes in again! I know that my Kindle would only send me the revised copy, but after reading Stephen King's foreword, he sold me on it. I just don't remember it well enough to know where the edits are!
Since the movie is based on the 1st book, I'm not at all concerned with Eddie's and Susannah's absence. I will be eagerly anticipating their arrival when the sequel arrives, though. Because frankly... I <3 Eddie.
I'm reading the books for first time myself. I just finished reading the fourth book which I thought was really good . I've heard mostly bad reviews about 5th book and haven't purchased it yet. Like you I'm trying to finish the series before movie.
Yikes, I still haven't purchased book 5. I've never bought a audible book before but now I'm thinking of maybe listening to the last 3 novels instead of reading them
