Not true. Reread TDotT. I finished it last week and it's fresh. It doesn't play out the way you remember. I would have agreed with you before my reread, but now I know I was mistaken, as you are. It isn't important because it's all a BS game being played by Detta.

actually that's very true, and as described in the book of TDofT, Eddie and Roland even discuss that she's a caricature of a black woman with Eddie using the book Mandingo and Butterfly McQueen from Gone with the Wind as inspiration for her cliche accent and vocabulary...

I'm also re-reading TDotT now, and there's far less 'Honk Muhfahs' than I remember, it just stuck in my mind due to it being memorable. She talks about how Eddie and Roland want to have sex with each other more than the colour of their skin. Their skin tone has no effect on who Detta is, how she would behave around them or the resistance she puts up. She uses race because it's an easy way to insult someone - by the way that they look. It's simply out of anger and hate. I honestly struggle to believe that a character with that much hate will turn around in this film (that she's not even in) and go 'oh look another person with the same colour skin as me, let's be best buds!'. Detta is about hating people, especially Roland because of how dangerous he is to her, not his skin colour.

And you're right, she refers to him in her mind as The Really Bad Man as opposed to Honk Muhfah' the majority of the time.

This can easily be amended on screen with a black person playing Roland, and Elba is playing Roland so some people need to either accept it whether they like the idea of him or not and see the film before passing judgement or don't watch it and move on with their lives. Detta is first and foremost about hate and trying to anger Roland and Eddie. Yeah, she does refer to the colour of their skin for about 150 pages (and inconsistently at that) in a 400 page book in an eight book series with multiple graphic novels. Her bigotry for these very few pages is a way of venting her anger, not the cause of it. This point alone is made undeniably obvious and I often feel that some people on this board haven't read the book and are only here to wind people up (only some, there are clearly some die hard fans on this board that don't share my opinion so to them I apologise, as I don't want to tarnish you with the same brush - and opinions, not facts, are all we have on this board).

Honk Mahfah, Greymeat and any other insults hurled at Roland and Eddie are as easy to amend as anything else. If people are really that hung up on it then it's safe to assume it's either been a long time since they read the book (and it's worth re-reading to get the facts straight) or they're arguing because they don't like the idea of a black person playing the role of a white person. If the latter is the case, then you're entitled to your opinion, but it doesn't mean you're right.

I'll still go see the movie, but not having two members of the ka-tet certainly lowers my expectations.
