Will Detta Walker Still Call Roland A "Honk Muh-fah" This Time Around?
Obviously not. One of my favorite minor details from TDOTT now gone, for PC agenda. So sad.
Come quietly, or there will be...trouble.

It changes the whole relationship between her and Roland. I agree, their subplots were great in the books. Now they'll be completely different.
shareNot true. Reread TDotT. I finished it last week and it's fresh. It doesn't play out the way you remember. I would have agreed with you before my reread, but now I know I was mistaken, as you are. It isn't important because it's all a BS game being played by Detta.
shareShe only calls Roland this for about 150pages of a 400 page book. This is also Detta calling Roland and Eddie these racist things without provocation. She's clearly remembering things other people did to her, so it is all a fabrication. What she *really* thinks of Roland: he's a dangerous man, a Really Bad Man. She felt him beside her in her head and felt threatened by him... because he was the one to bring all of her together, to become Susannah.
Honkey Mafah is a distraction. She doesn't believe her own words. Knows they're BS. This can be played out w/o changing the character interactions. Those 150 pages are not important other than Susannah's transformation. Honkey Mafah doesn't even reappear, so you're complaining about 150 pages buried in Thousands?

You're trying very hard to convince yourself of that, but nobody is buying it.
shareNo. *You're* not buying it. Plenty of other people do buy it and aren't *beep* racist. I mean, your not liking casting doesn't make you racist. You are correct about that. You just *happen* to also be a *beep* racist douchenozzle.
shareMaybe he is, maybe he isn't. All I know is that he is the epitome of the arrogant fan that "knows" they are the truest fan and wants to constantly beat you over the head with this seemingly unassailable point.

It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing .
actually that's very true, and as described in the book of TDofT, Eddie and Roland even discuss that she's a caricature of a black woman with Eddie using the book Mandingo and Butterfly McQueen from Gone with the Wind as inspiration for her cliche accent and vocabulary...
'The way she's talking is an act, too. But it's not as good. It's so stupid, so goddam hokey!'
- Eddie
I'm also re-reading TDotT now, and there's far less 'Honk Muhfahs' than I remember, it just stuck in my mind due to it being memorable. She talks about how Eddie and Roland want to have sex with each other more than the colour of their skin. Their skin tone has no effect on who Detta is, how she would behave around them or the resistance she puts up. She uses race because it's an easy way to insult someone - by the way that they look. It's simply out of anger and hate. I honestly struggle to believe that a character with that much hate will turn around in this film (that she's not even in) and go 'oh look another person with the same colour skin as me, let's be best buds!'. Detta is about hating people, especially Roland because of how dangerous he is to her, not his skin colour.
And you're right, she refers to him in her mind as The Really Bad Man as opposed to Honk Muhfah' the majority of the time.
This can easily be amended on screen with a black person playing Roland, and Elba is playing Roland so some people need to either accept it whether they like the idea of him or not and see the film before passing judgement or don't watch it and move on with their lives. Detta is first and foremost about hate and trying to anger Roland and Eddie. Yeah, she does refer to the colour of their skin for about 150 pages (and inconsistently at that) in a 400 page book in an eight book series with multiple graphic novels. Her bigotry for these very few pages is a way of venting her anger, not the cause of it. This point alone is made undeniably obvious and I often feel that some people on this board haven't read the book and are only here to wind people up (only some, there are clearly some die hard fans on this board that don't share my opinion so to them I apologise, as I don't want to tarnish you with the same brush - and opinions, not facts, are all we have on this board).
Honk Mahfah, Greymeat and any other insults hurled at Roland and Eddie are as easy to amend as anything else. If people are really that hung up on it then it's safe to assume it's either been a long time since they read the book (and it's worth re-reading to get the facts straight) or they're arguing because they don't like the idea of a black person playing the role of a white person. If the latter is the case, then you're entitled to your opinion, but it doesn't mean you're right.
Great post! Very true, and logical.
shareThat's a whole post full of nonsense and excuses, you clearly have decided you are going to like this film regardless of how dodgy the casting or how low the quality. But some of us want better for a Dark Tower adaption, it actually resembling the books would be a start.
shareOne sentence or one page...no matter the length of your thoughts/rationale, it makes no difference. The response from Detta198 is always some permutation of "nonsense and excuses".

Well when any of you mindless defenders give anything other than excuses and nonsense in your posts. I'll have something else to say.
Now be quiet foolish hypocrite. Go back to pushing your double standard on the Ghost in the shell board.
That's the thing: you can disagree but still say "I see where you are coming from even if I don't agree with it," Yet, you never do. You ceased being a regular rational human being (at least on the IMDB) a long time ago.
Now, you're just a caricature...a parody...a cartoon.

This coming from you who proclaims your opinion as fact, your own views on race changing as rules everyone should listen to and insults anyone who disagrees.
Nothing you say about means anything because you are completely full of sh*t.
This coming from you who proclaims your opinion as fact
1. to announce or declare in an official or formal manner
No I accurately described you. You sad little SJW hypocrite. You who goes to other boards you've never visited before to tell people they are wrong for complaining about a race change. You who has decided that you are the judge on what race change is allowed, which is apparently (because of your clear racism) only the White characters.
shareI'd forgotten about that detail. I guess I need to read the books again. It looks like they solved that problem completely though by leaving out the characters of Eddie and Odetta/Detta/Susannah altogether. Not sure how they are going to make this work without those two. Word has it that there is going to be a tv series to cover what they leave out in the movie. I'll still go see the movie, but not having two members of the ka-tet certainly lowers my expectations.

When they've included characters from the last book there is no excuse not to use Eddie and Susannah, they're already cramming as many characters in as possible. What's a few more? You act like they know what they are doing, none of the idiots behind this have read the books. They've skimmed through Wikipedia and taken a few names and dumped the characters in the first film.
shareYeah...characters that will likely show up and then either be killed off or never appear again.
More important characters (two of the central cast, in this case) require a disproportionately higher amount of screentime.

Have you read the books Spidey? If so, what was your favourite part? I've seen a lot of hate from you towards this adaptation (which although I really don't agree with you, you're completely entitled to) so I was wondering if we can hear what you liked about the books. It'd be nice to hear something positive from you regarding the series.
shareYes, I found that out after I posted. However it sounds like they are waiting to see how well the first movie does before they fully commit to a sequel. The more I read the more I realized they are mainly sticking to The Gunslinger, but there would have been a lot less confusion if they had also referenced the title of the book and not just the entire series for the title of the movie. Does that make sense? Things make a great deal more sense in my head than they do in written form.
sharethat sounds interesting, do you mind providing a link/suggestions towards where you found that they're mainly sticking to the gunslinger? Just out of interest!
shareThat was just an impression I got. I did read one article (based on the leaked trailer) that suggested this film would follow a different beam. I found that here: http://www.looper.com/27748/everything-missed-leaked-dark-tower-trailer/
I don't know anything about the site or author, I just found the theory interesting.
I don't normally watch trailers as I like to see every scene in the correct context, but I am just itching to see a peek at the official release!
The bigger vibe I'm seeing out there is that this movie is essentially going to be a sequel.
sharethanks for the link!
I'm of the impression that it is a sequel but telling the story in a way that incorporates a few narratives that'll still make sense if they only make this one film, so essentially taking a few plot points and putting them in to one book with views to carry on the series.
It can be done and re-reading the books at the moment has shown me this, but it's up for debate.
I can't wait for anything DT related at the moment; a trailer, another interview, casting news for the series, time and Ka will tell!
I'll be starting my re-read in a couple weeks (way too many irons in the fire to start now even though I desperately want to). I have yet to read Wind Through the Keyhole as it wasn't out the first time I read the books and I only heard about it after the second read. I saw a vlog that talked about how it may have played into the direction of the movie. What is your opinion on when that 8th book should be read? Would it be better at the end or after book 4?
sharei prefer to read it in the order that King intended but that's just me. I can see why people read it afterwards as it's almost like a revisit to a great part of their journey with some extra information and a story. I think I'm just picky in that way. I'm going to read it after W&G this time but I'll see how I feel on another turn of the wheel.
