I can't Wait For Elba as Roland

And Stephen King agrees according to his Twitter feed.
" To me, the color of the gunslinger doesn't matter. What I care about is how fast he can draw...and that he takes care of the ka-tet."

After the treat of a Ron Howard directed Dark Tower, the casting of Elba and McConaughey are the best news i have heard on this project.

Ron Howard isn't directing, thanks for playing though.....

reply

Howard was attached early on.

I am certain that whether or not Stephen King actually agrees, he would have to be an utter fool to publically denounce Idris Elba as Roland because people would immediately call him a racist...and while I don't actually know what his real opinion is (and neither does anyone else), I do know that Stephen King is no fool...so let's just leave it at that...

He did just double down on his enthusiasm for Elba in a subsequent interview. If he is hiding his true feelings he's doing it very well.

To restate my original point...Stephen King is no fool...let that rattle around in your brain pan for a bit...I'll wait...

I rattled it around. My response post holds up just as well. Since he is no fool, he is either hiding his true feelings well or being ingenuous in his support.

Or, he is resigned to the fact that the decision is made for better or worse and at the end of the day Idris Elba, is at least a competent actor. Either way the fact that the casting has been confirmed in no way ensures that this movie will reach conclusion; with the scheduled release date less than 10 months away, barring pushing that date back I would say that the producers have put themselves in a bad position to get this movie out by that date by waiting so long to begin principal photography; which I would like to point out still hasn't begun yet as they have only 2 people currently cast...

I think that all things considered the casting might not be the only hurdle this film may need to clear in order to be successful; in fact it may not even end up being the biggest one...

Stephen King was well aware of Elba's potential casting long before anyone in the public did. If he'd had a problem then, there would have been no risk in him intervening before things were settled enough to be announced.

It's the question that drives us. I know the answer is 42.

This is a great point that I can't believe I A) missed and B) don't see more often.

King clearly has a problem with slow people. As someone who has never finished first in a marathon, I am offended by his crass and insensitive comment.

Is King implying that a black actor would physically be a faster draw than someone of another race due to some sort of natural athleticism? Such stereotyping! Shame on you, Mr. King!
