Jerry, I was just thinking this was the only way to make this work. It's kind of exciting in a way.... it leaves so many possible outcomes, sort of like Sliders.
I feel like that's what they are gonna end up doing. Filming him ascending the tower as the first scene and then show him in the desert after. Things will be different this time around though which is the only way they will get away with certain changes they are gonna have to make regarding casting.
For example a big part of detta/Susanna's character is that she doesn't trust white people and because Roland is white in the books it raises the question of how they would make her untrustworthy of Roland if they are both black. This is all assuming they make a second movie which i hope they do. I think Idris will do a great job as Roland. I just hope they don't mess up Susanna.
I think it will follow the story somewhat but i think that it will be obvious to the people who have read the books that he has been through this more than once. Maybe they will make it seem like this time around is the time where he gets out of the loop.

That was mostly Detta Walker. Susannah makes a few biting comments at the beginning of The Waste Lands and then she's pretty much good with Roland (outside of the moments when he's being a jackass in general).

I would like to see them really point out that Roland is carrying the horn of Eld, and could even have him mention that it feels not right in his hand for some reason, like he feels that he shouldn't have it but doesn't know why.
Readers would know why. New readers would not be spoiled.
To elaborate on Jerry's reply, it picks up at the end of the 7th book where Roland's quest has been "reset," just with the Horn of Eld. The Horn proves that he's making different decisions and maybe even developed a sense of sentimentality that was absent in the books. It's a very interesting way to do the movies (in my opinion - some disagree), and makes sense of the reason Roland might handle situations differently than he did in the books.
