Why all the hate?

Haven't been on the board. Haven't followed the film. But everyone is saying this film is a pile of *beep* or garbage? Why?

reply

The primary reason why some people are angry: Because Idris Elba is playing Roland Deschain

It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing .

Ohhh. Well, shouldn't they not care? As long as he plays the gunslinger great he's fine.

reply

Not in their minds. The excuses range from "a black guy can't play Roland because Roland is based off of a character in a poem that was white and, well...well..." to "Hollywood gunslingers were white and Roland was modeled after them, so Roland should be white too" to "this is Hollywood racism against whites" to "Elba is a terrible actor".

The hilarious thing about this particular excuse is that it's based on a longstanding falsehood. Historically speaking, Hollywood whitewashed the Old West too. Casting-wise, the most recent iteration of The Magnificent Seven is much closer to being an accurate representation of Old West demographics than any Western John Wayne or Clint Eastwood starred in.

Naturally! However, the proponents of this argument stick to their guns and mention that Roland is specifically based on an actor's character of a time when this historical obfuscation was bought hook, line and sinker...and so he must be this way.

Ha - of course they will. Gotta maintain that glorious tradition of peddling Hollywood's historical inaccuracies, simply because "that's how it was back then."

reply

Yes because you'll accept any race change, not like you'd be complaining about a film simply because they cast a white actress would you? Because that would make everything you typed there complete bullsh*t.

And because we are on the internet.

Because it's blindingly obvious that it is a steaming pile of sh*t.

Race changes in regards to the casting. It's like dropping a nuke on the White House for IMDB users.

Whatever you are, be a good one.
