How King isn't disgusted by the approach to these films is beyond me. Who knows? Maybe he secretly is and just won't admit it to the media, for obvious reasons.
Well, while it sounds like you’re disgusted by the filmmakers’ approach, Stephen King obviously feels differently judging from the praise he’s been giving it. It seems many people wanted the film(s) to be one thing, and the filmmakers wanted something slightly different, and King approves. However, “different” doesn’t necessarily = “bad,” and King openly praising the production doesn’t mean that there’s some secret nefarious agenda at work. As a lot of us here already know, King has no problem openly disapproving of something (see
The Shining). Or, he could've easily chosen to not to say anything at all. But the fact is he did speak on how he felt about the production, and his opinions just happen to be positive.
Elba should have did what Will Smith did with Superman and backed off, due to the importance of the character in pop-culture.
To be fair, Superman and Roland Deschain are not even remotely close in terms of their respective importance to pop culture. Any one of us can ask a stranger on the street who Superman is and it's very likely that person will be familiar with him; the same can't be said for Roland. Sure, most DT fans, myself included, can tell you that Roland is very important to us and that he should be important to pop culture. But even among Stephen King fans, there are readers that aren’t familiar with the
Dark Tower series. King’s said so himself. Who knows - if this movie and Idris Elba’s portrayal of Roland turn out to be good, maybe he will be.
