Will Susannah cause controversy?

I know there is a big debate between fans about detta's perception of Roland because of Idris. But what if they still cast her by the book?. How would non readers react to her in general? She is a very unique character. Im afraid the internet will call her a Mary Sue" and "Unrealistic". Remember the *beep* Rey is a "mary sue"ban wangon that Force Awakens bought on? Anyway how do you think Detta/Odetta will be perceived by the movie goer if we get a second film? And if they adapt her by the book?

reply

I will wait until i see how they portray Roland before i worry about how he interacts with Susannah.
His portrayal is mandatory to their relationship aswell. And i dont just mean his appearance

reply

Dear lord, not another controversy!

I hope not, but let's be realistic about it. Once production for a sequel is underway, people will find controversy in anything. However, I hope the audience reaction would be relatively positive. It would require a very good actress (not necessarily a known actress, but one with talent nonetheless) to pull off the complexity, especially when you consider the three personalities she needs to believably pull off. If they could cast a talented actress there is no reason she would receive a negative reception. She's a very unique character, and I truly don't think people would consider a double amputee whose suffered abuse from racial discrimination and gone on psycho binges due to her schizophrenia a "Mary Sue."

Then again, I have a hard time believing half the things people find controversial, so what do I know?

reply

If there are going to be scenes where Eddie carries Suze, I imagine that Eddie's actor will have to be reasonably strong.

reply

Very well said joannath. I agree it would take a very good actress. Its crazy to think that we're going to get Cuthbert and Alain first (tv show). Before we meet Eddie and Suez. Can't wait for it all!

reply

lol, Idris could do it one handed. And i'm sure they can CGI the hell out of her baby bjorn they use to carry her.

reply

I assume she would still be cast according to the books as each turn of the wheel only resets Roland. We know each turn is at least similar to the previous loops due to Roland's Déjà vu but he could be drawing Eddie and Odetta from 1 dimension over or 3 or 10 etc. It's impossible to speculate what Eddie and O/Detta we may get due to it not being an adaptation.

Detta's cliche'd 'shuck and jive' talk may not translate from book to film, i can see how it could come across as incredibly offensive actually for non readers, and i'm not sure making her even more of a caricature could make it any better. The humour element of her racist slurs in the books could be very tricky to work in. Should it be dead serious or darkly amusing? (If i had to choose, i would go with serious as we already have Eddie for *beep* and giggles).

Imo she will be by far the hardest character to write to film, more than Roland. I personally think a known and respected actress is almost a necessity, the writers/film makers will be swimming in shark infested waters with Detta and an actress that has already earned a good reputation could be a make or break manoeuvre. Viola Davis maybe? She's a very young looking 51.

reply

Or Kerry Washington maybe? She's about the perfect age and very talented, too.

I didn't consider how difficult the vernacular might be... How much is too much? Gotta keep it real, but not offensive. Hopefully the Odetta angles would negate the offense; she's a schizophrenic who created the charicature herself. Interested to see how that'll get spun!

reply

I could see her too. And exactly, how far can they take Detta before it's too hokey? Odetta is a bit of a caricature too, so overly kind, gentle and soft spoken. I think that's why a fair bit of detta-ness remains when they merge. It's kinda cheating, but a flash of montages of the 2 different personalities and highlights of their different lives seems like an easy out.

I agree that O/Detta/Susannah will probably be the hardest character to write due to her overall complexity. As far as the caricature aspect of her character and the racial slurs that come along with it, it's hard to say whether or not they'll opt to keep that intact. On one hand, I could see them pulling punches in this respect because it might be offensive to some just due to the nature of the caricature and the barrage of racial slurs she likes to hurl. On the other hand, I could see them wanting to keep her intact for fidelity's sake and because it would draw a distinct line between her personalities, as well as allow her full viciousness to come through to the audience. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what they go with.

Viola Davis definitely has the chops to play that kind of role. I also think Naomie Harris (my first choice, who previously worked with Idris in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom), Rutina Wesley (whose sharp-tongued character Tara in True Blood reminded me of Detta at times), Anika Noni Rose (who already has Stephen King cred playing Sara Tidwell in the Bag of Bones mini-series), or Nicole Beharie (an underrated actress who played Lt. Abbie Mills on Sleepy Hollow) could pull it off too. They're all great actresses.

reply

They could cast her spot on, they won't and it won't even get a sequel to get that fair, they couldn't get the dynamic between Roland and Detta right because the idiotic casting of Elba has made that impossible. So her character could never be accurate to the book in anything but look.

reply

Hypothetically if a second movie goes ahead, why not keep in Detta's racism towards Roland? Some type of deviation will need to be made between her and Roland anyway until she becomes Susannah. And not an 'uncle tom' racism but just how she's written, it won't make sense but Detta is nuts which is the point and what the non readers will need to understand. It could be an effective way of showing that something's seriously off with the woman.

reply

That would be stupid, Detta hates Roland because she's racist and he is white. Not the same for her to make racist comments to a black Roland. That would be idiotic.
There is no way they could possibly get that dynamic because of Elba. If he didn't have a gigantic ego he would never have taken the role in the first place when he doesn't belong in it.

reply

Detta hates Roland because she's racist and he is white.

Surface stuff. She genuinely hates (and fears) him because of the threat he poses to her as a coldly pragmatic and cunning veteran killer that is acutely aware of her duality of personality. Note that while she insults Eddie in a similar over-the-top fashion, Detta calls Roland the "really bad man".

reply

You can try and delude yourself into thinking that all you want. You've just convinced yourself that Roland's race plays no part in the story, despite it clearly written in the book (that's if you've even read it).

reply

Detta hates everyone for whatever reason is the most convenient to her, real or imagined. Amongst many other dissociative disorders, she has a raging acute case of depersonalisation and derealisation. She entirely imagines Eddie and Roland dangling bits of food in front of her face just to rip it away at the last second and then laugh at her. If she can imagine entire scenarios that didn't happen, i don't think it's too much of a stretch that Detta could choose to see people however they better fit her purpose to hate them.

It could come across as unrealistic to have her hurl the same insults at Roland if he's black, but nothing is beyond the realms of possibility when it comes to Detta and her perceptions of people/places/events imo.

reply

It would be ridiculous for Detta to be calling a black Roland racial slurs like she would if he was white. Sounds like you are really trying to convince yourself otherwise.

reply

I'm tossing the name Gugu Mbatha-Raw in as a possible Susannah because I love the hell out of her right now.

reply

Ronny, I saw her in Belle and she was tremendous. As soon as I read your post and said the name my husband replied, "Oh, good call!" LOL So she'd be a very good one, too!

reply

i just think the books are too dense to make into a single movie, i really hoped they would do a game of thrones style adaptation because it needs so much more time to give the story justice

reply

A single movie is not the plan. A tv series telling the events depicted in 'Wizard and Glass' is already in the works. Other movies introducing Eddie and Susannah will follow if this movie will be a success.

reply

susan delgado is a character in this movie so they have obviously butchered the story already

reply

oh my bad this is meant to be the whole story so should have susan in it
