Underdog sports movies always ruin it with their endings

This film would have been better if he loses at the end, but in giving his all he earns the respect of Joe Rogan who donates his own money to save the music programme, or something like that. Because otherwise, a 42 year old fat biology teacher with a year of training winning a UFC fight after getting his ass whooped for the first two rounds is just totally ridiculous.

reply

If you want realistic endings maybe start watching documentaries instead of fictional movies?

reply

It's a comedy, it's supposed to be ridiculous.

reply

No, comedies are supposed to be funny.

reply

It was

reply

I didnt say it wasn't. My point was that being a comedy doesn't excuse ridiculousness.

reply

Well it was far fetched but it has happened when an underdog with minimal experience defied the odds and makes a big splash. The story kinda mirrored the career of Tim Boetsch http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Boetsch
I didnt think he should have won either, at least not like that and I certainly dont think he should have been awarded 50 thou to win his first undercard fight if by losing he would have only got 10 thou. The standard is double the fight pay if you win so 10 to fight +10 to win still would have gotten him just 20 thou. Dont know where they got 50 thou. I figured he would have loss but they could have been awarded the Fight of the night bonus to split since they both put on a great fight and the other guy whos a top contender though he is the opponent has a big heart and understands Kevin was fighting to save the kids program so he donates his half of the fight bonus witch came up to 40 thou plus his fight purse makes 50. kids are saved.

Remember, use the magic twig wisely

Actually it happens all the time where an underdog comes in and steals a fight in many different events throughout history.

... but the OP's proposed ending would be both moderately realistic, AND fictional? It makes for better writing if you can combine the two, so if it's plausible, then why not do it? It's not like there's some rule that just because it didn't happen, it has to be ridiculous.

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

I was thinking that too, that he would lose, but the media would love him, and they'd end up getting donations from all different sources, to save all the school programs. Maybe even the fighter who won would donate his 50k.

Also I wanted to say your icon is awesome. I'm your huckleberry :)

"Evidently Mr. Ringo's an educated man. Now I really hate him."

reply

Yeah, it would have been cool if he had lost and since he became a "Youtube sensation", donations would have poured in for the school to save ALL of the extracurricular activities...but then, that would be too complicated for this 'simple comedy'.

reply

Wouldn't be any worse than the end of Kingpin when Woody loses the bowling championship but then he gets an endoresment deal which brings in enough money to save the farm.

reply

Yeah, he should have lost. Still not a bad movie overall though, it just would have been a little better if he did lose. I thought he was going to get his arm broke rather than give up at the end, alluding back to his date with Salma Hayek. Easily could have saved the music programs still with donations.

reply

I've seen stuff like that happen in comedies. Can't think of one off the top of my head, but I know they have made that move before.

Actually it's a two drink minimum. It'll be reflected in your tuition.

reply

I thought the exact same thing. It would have been more believable if he lost but the UFC donated the money. The other thing I thought of was so they get the money for one year, then what happens the following year and the year after that? They will still need money that they don't have.

Ugh, I guess it's just a movie and is by definition make-believe.

reply

He should've lost but then earned Fight of the Night honours or something. That would've made it much better. Awww disappointment then due to getting FotN they still pull it off.

reply

He always had the chance to win at the final match because he said that he wrestled in college. He had enough experience to deal damage and take defenses quite relentlessly. Just like Niko said in the film, "Wrestlers make great fighters."

reply

The cliché ending was weak.

He should have gotten a beating while earning the respect of his opponent who then donates his winnings to the school.

Besides, 50k after taxes wouldn't be enough money anyways, but if they combined their winnings (50k + 10k) and had gotten Fight of the Night money, then they would've been able to come up with the required funding.

This is yet another example of why I haven't set foot in a movie theater in 10 years.

reply

How is that or any other example given on this thread any better than the ending that was shown in the movie. Not one of the examples are any more believable than what was shown. As far as him losing and then the UFC or his opponent donates their own money, I would find that less believable than having him win.

yet you find the time to comment on movie board and watched this "lame" movie. But I guess you justify watching this movie because you downloading it illegally because that's so much better than watching it on a big screen at theaters.

reply

Oh, God! You guys are way overthinking this. Sure, it would've been more 'realistic' to lose and have the money donated. I liked the ending. He took a beating, yes, but he survived the onslaught. He survived the second 'surge' in the next round, and by doing both earned the respect of Detrich. He showed resilience when he re-achieved the clench, and showing strength from his wrestling days, power bombed dude for the win.

A 'realistic' ending would've had the fight stopped or over in the first 30 seconds. It would've been almost as bad as his first fight. What kind of ending would THAT have been? If nothing else, it would've been very un-climactic and boring. Now we're complaining because the movie ended in a boring way. Cliched endings happen for a reason, because they work. As long as the score and editing is there, it'll work.

His ass wasn't whooped in either round because he was still standing. One of his strengths was that he could always take a hit. It didn't have a cliché lucky punch and that would be unrealistic given the punch speed/hand reflexes of the other guy. It ended up focused on a grappling component which was his natural strong suite and not the other guys. I found it realistic and I didn't think it would be. Remember it's mixed martial arts, that's the whole idea of it, to make use of different skill sets at different times. I think it was very well done and completely believable to people who have fighting experience. He won it, things can go that way and do. He didn't do much for two rounds, he was still fresh and he went for it. The other guy would be quite tired by then. Also he was surprised as *beep* at being hit suddenly as he had underestimated his opponent.

reply

Yeah, there's no possible way a real UFC ref wouldn't have stopped the fight and given the TKO to Dietrich within 30 seconds of the first round.
