WHy is nobody asking this question or is it sacrilege?

When he is given 10k to lose does that mean these initial matches are fixed?
Meaning who would fight with Bas rutten and get their ass kicked and even risk permanent injury?
That is what I meant by "fixed" I Mentioned INITIAL..So don't lynch me all you UFC/MMA fans

Its fair I guess since this sport can permanently injure someone, only crazy people would bother fighting just to lose.

I used to always wonder about Tennis. There is this huge amount of players who qualify for the Wimbledon and they barely reach the fourth semi-finals.
Their matches are not even aired on TV.

But they continue playing it must take good money to make a trip to those tournaments at the end of it they just lose?

There has to be something more to it. Like I know in my country if they just got qualified it was a great thing, does not matter if they lost the first match.

This brings me to something totally unrelated. One of the female players reached the third semi-final in the Wimbledon I guess(or some recognized tennis match)
Her opponent literally threw the match away, her opponent was too good
Infact I went back and watched all her matches. She does not have the power not skill and it seemed every one of her opponents lost on purpose.

Then she comes back a loser and get a 2 million dollar advertising contract and later on goes on to earn millions of dollars in advertising and just appearing at some functions.
She keeps losing in all matches she played thereafter. Never even reaching the fourth semi-finals.

Then It struck maybe she paid all of her opponents to lose.
Lets face it the one who lost to her in the third semi-final would have, if she had won the match she would definitely lose the second semi-final because she was up against Serena.

If you look there are always only 5-6 players who have a shot at winning the title.
IN this case there were only 3 because the top 6 were got a match together much earlier with each other and eliminated the other 3 or 2 contenders.
So this is the reason why this "fake" player managed to reach the third semi-final that season.

That is why before and after that she never even reached the fourth semi-final no matter how much money she pays I don't think these 6 top contender will ever throw the match away cause they do have a shot at winning.

I know the third or fourth semi-final is not a big deal but the media here is making it big deal (of course paid by her PR agency) otherwise how else she could have got the contract.

The maths is that she could pay all her opponents the prize money and still recover it all just with the first advertising contract she got.

Coming back to the topic. Do we have such losers in UFC too. You know without these "losers" there would never be so many matches they would have to start with the third semi-finals. But them more matches means more sponsor money etc etc.
In each match a top contender will be there otherwise no one would watch.

So was the offer given to Kevin to "lose" is what I just thought it means?

reply

No, it's just expected that he would lose. He himself expected to lose, but it was a small price to pay for 10 grand. There was no implication of fixing.

I think the movie would have been better with him losing a decision after a 3rd-round rally.

No, that's what all these fighting matches do. The winner gets the purse, but the loser gets something for his trouble too.

reply

No, everyone who fights gets paid, but those who lose get a significantly smaller amount. James' character never expected to win, (he was an inexperienced amateur), so he was expecting to get the losing purse, (10,000$).

reply

Another conspiracy theorist! Losers in boxing matches get paid too. There's very few (if any at all) professional sports where winner takes all. That doesn't mean they're rigged.🐭

No.

Can't stop the signal.

reply

No, it's like at your job, even though you're a loser, you still get paid to come in and fail.
