This is a good point, I like to think that part of him, maybe a very minuscule part, knew that Alex was right and he felt guilty for "stealing" her mail. Maybe he kept the letter locked up to help him feel less guilty. I honestly don't know for sure. But for some reason this did not bother me as much as it seems to bother others.
It kind of reminds me of Allie's mom in The Notebook keeping all of Noah's letters. Why did she keep them, why didn't she just throw them away?

In all seriousness, Greg was an absolute dickhead. He cared nothing for Rosie and his type would love a letter like this to gloat over knowing he stopped Rosie from having a real love in her life.
