When they showed Rosie's Nokia 3310 the first time, I was like "OK, it's 2002 or something", but even for 2002 England, this was a cheap phone.
I burst into laughter when we were shown that she still uses that same phone in 2009/2010. By that time I think all European providers were handing you a free, cheap or not, SMARTphone with your plan. Did they try to hint us something? Something like: He (Alex) is living the American dream, and she is stuck in poor old England, since Alex was clearly using a smartphone in 2002 and had that american lifestyle he thought she envies him for? Either way, it seemed very improbable.

I know some people in their early 30s who still use a phone like that now. One of my mates says that he likes the long battery life.

The book was actually set in Ireland. In the film, Rosie and Alex seem to live in England, but Rosie's father is Irish and some of the minor characters sound a tad Irish too.

I think it was shown to highlight how different they were. Rosie was simple, she had a simple dream of owning a quiet local hotel and she was now a mother on a job that didn't grant her much money. She had no desire for the "latest" phone, she only used it to contact Alex.

Whereas Alex was becoming overwhelmed by a lavish american lifestyle and became materialistic

In 2002 the Nokia 3310 had only been out for a little over a year. And this model was a huge success.
