His Dad?

Maybe I zoned out or something but was it ever made clear what happened to his father? I mean, was the whole thing that Cillian Murphy was his dad? Because if so that is just so clumsy...

reply

Leon (Cillian Murphy) was the guy who killed Will's (Justin Timberlake) dad.

Yeah, but the story was never really explained. Like, he said they had both said the same thing when he first met will about Henry's suicide. I mean, what kind of crazy identical circumstances would cause them to say the same things? That wasn't revealed....

The "whole thing" is that Leon is not Will's dad.

The thing Will said:
"why are you investigating a suicide, there's mass murder in the ghetto everyday"

Leon answers saying:
"That is fascinating. Huh. I heard another man talk like that"

He's not saying that Will is using the same exact words like his father, but that he is on the verge of figuring out the truths behind the system. Also, that like his Father before him, Will talks like an idealist: "the authorities should be investigating murders and fight crime, instead of being on the payroll of the rich and mighty, to maintain the status quo.

There was no "big reveal" where everything was laid out nicely, regarding the story of Will's dad, but there are many small reveals throughout.

- Will's dad regularly participated as a "fighter".
- Will's mom mentions that in the fights "no one wins".
- Will's dad did not keep all the time he was winning, he tried to do good with it
- The Powers That Be, want there to be a scarcity of time within the lower class Zones, Will's dad was upsetting some of the balances
- Leon was once from the ghetto himself, he got out
- After leaving the ghetto Leon embraced the ideals of the Powers That Be, and made sure that no one else would leave the ghetto, or accumulate a lot of time
- Leon killed Will's dad, because Will's dad had figured out that there actually is enough time for everyone to live out a natural lifetime, but that some were hoarding time as to potentially live forever

Now some numbers:
- 28 = actual age of Will
- 50 = actual age of Will's mom
- 50 = years that Leon has been a Timekeeper, making him at least 75
- 20 = years that Will's dad has been dead, he was probably born in the same generation as his wife

Congratulations on a really good summary.

Just on Leon. I think he actually tells one of his subordinates early on in the film, he's 85.🐭
