Because this was a horribly written movie.

That scene really bothered me. The inflation was ridiculous. Coffee going up form 3 minutes to 4 minutes seems sensible but increasing the damn bus ride 100% is nuts. Two hours seems like a huge price to pay. 1 hour is expensive but 2? That's a lot of time. Seemed like way too extreme a hike to pull out of your ass.
Currently bus fare over here is 2.25 during rush hours. If it was 4.50 the next day out of the blue people would throw a fit. Also, the bus driver not cutting her any slack seemed a little off. It could happen nut this is life and death. I have see bus drivers be far more generous in far less serious situations.

The question is: Why would anyone want to walk for 2 hours straight in the first place at that time of night in what is referred to as the ghetto?
I can't stand walking 30 minutes anywhere, so 2 is definitely something I would avoid.
That's actually a really good point. Her being in that location would have necessitated her walking two hours or spending one hour on the bus to get there earlier in the day, after the point of the movie where we are shown she is already practically broke, and then expecting to double that for the return trip home. Pretty stupid.
Since she only had 1 hour and a half at the end of the day, she clearly didn't go to wherever she was to make "time". So she should have just stayed home and waited for JT and she would have been fine. Stupid stupid.
Who says that was the only place she visited that day?Was her son the only one working? Why should we assume that she was just chilling at home while he was out?
shareTime was used as a source of currency and the prices kept going up in the poor areas so they would die off.
shareOk, a few things:
1) it's been said before in this thread; I have no idea why some people have a hard time understanding this......coffee was a luxury that ppl didn't have to buy, so by making it worth 4 minutes, just about everyone could, and would buy it. Transportation was a necessity, so they made the cost astronomical, to keep the poor poorer. Yes, it doesn't make sense to pay 2.5 hours (2 hour cost + 30 min ride) for a trip that you could THEORITICALLY walk in 2 hours. But if you're making your day-to-day quota on hours (making sure you always have at least 1 day, or having plans to acquire them very soon), most people would choose the comfort of taking the bus.
BB, your calculations are wrong. I've, too, lived in L.A. and taken the bus everyday. There were some routes that going 15 miles took 2+ hours, and some where going 7 took 35 minutes. Or less. Also, in the movie, since these people did not have cars, this doesn't matter anyway, as their traffic would be practically non-existent. At no time did you see any traffic in the ghetto.
2) The mom was gone overnight, to work at the Garment District. It didn't seem that she went out of her way to pay back her loan and bills. Also, since she didn't take the bus since the previous morning, she was unaware that the price had gone up overnight.
3) None of the people on the bus would help her because it was 1 hour of their life! Sure, in today's society, giving someone the remainder of their bus fare isn't a big deal. But it would be if you had only a few dollars, you spend a penny every second, and when you reach $0 you'll die.

The one hour price Olivia Wilde expected would be more rational (spend one hour to save yourself a two hour walk), but one point of the scene was that the people of Dayton were getting gouged by the people in power.
shareSince there are gangs attacking people and stealing time,it would be unsafe to walk such a distance, therefore part of the value of the bus is safety. Gangs are less likely to attack a huge group, they look for defenseless people on thier own. The bus costs 2 hours because the true value of the bus would include this factor.
shareOk to clear some things up, from the perspective of someone who watched it very recently.
Why did she go to a loan place so far away? She was working in the garment district, which she said when she was making her plans with her son, she was going to be away for two days, meaning it was far enough away for her to stay there for the two days instead of commuting. Also why she need to take the bus back in the first place.
Why did she go out with only an hour and a half left?
She had just paid two days (that she earned) on the loan, leaving her the hour to pay for the bus and time for the journey.
How long did the bus take?
Less than half an hour, because that was all she had left after the original fare of one hour.
Why didn't she phone him to say she was stranded?
Do you really think the poor have the disposable income for a mobile phone? If a bus costs 2 hours, how much would a phone and the subsequent bill cost?
How was she running for an hour when the bus only takes 20-30 minutes?
She was running for an hour before they showed the bus showing up, this was just the way the scene was shot. Films do not always use very literal linear time, it would have killed the drama of the scene to show her with an hour left and then the bus showing up, they wanted to up the tension by showing her with very
little time.
Why would you pay 2 hours for a half hour bus ride, when it is a two hour walk?
She had just finished work, it was dark. They live in the ghetto. The same reason people take the bus now? If you had just worked a full day for 20 dollars, and the bus home was 5 dollars, would you refuse to pay it and walk, even though you are exhausted?
Also...... if the bus still had cost an hour, and the journey takes 30 minutes, and she only had an hour and a half to start with... that would have been cutting it pretty fine. Say the bus broke down; or had an accident?
It wasn't a very good film really
