Not bad film but not an original concept

Would you agree the basic concept is just another take on "The Island" which itself is another take on "Logans Run"?

reply

I was going to disagree with you vehemently.

But you know what you're dead on. The difference here is that it is more "gritty and real". And this world isnt some microutopia created to basically continue the human species.

The thing about logans run is if you can create that world to be such a utopia you can have the same utopia without enforced death simply by limiting reproduction. A one child policy....

I thought this was a Logans Run film and had to look at the message boards to make sure.

It must have been the Harlan Ellison short story that I remember reading in US Playboy in the early '80s-a short story about a world with the 'time is money' scenario-a hustler type wakes up after a bender having given a prostitute a year and his subsequent scramble to get it back or scrounge more time before the micro charge in his head detonates at zero time-no visual time clock on the arm, but a 'voice in the head' clock-still the physical forearm contact for transfer though.

Harlan Ellison's 1965 short story ""Repent, Harlequin!" Said the Ticktockman" was the story you were thinking of. I just read that story and came to this board to see if anyone else mentioned it. I will have to see the film to see if it appears similar to the story or not. I keep seeing Logan's Run mentioned as well, a film and TV series I loved as a child.

The film has very little to do with the short story other than the basic idea-like most Hollywood action sci fi films, it has to have a likeable central character with a love interest.

I just read Time Is Money by Lee Falk from 1975. This movie borrows so much from that story I can't believe they don't give a writing credit to Lee Falk. The story has the society using time as money, shaking hands to transfer money from one person to another, The clock not starting until you become an adult and are given one year of time. The elite with centuries of time saved up, etc.

I haven't as yet seen the film, but if the concept was a reality I think you would soon see a revolution to beat all revolutions (make the French revolution look like a pillow-fight)

I feel I should jump in here and make corrections to this statement. And, I really wish people would WATCH the movies they reference. Which clearly they have not, or they didn't fully understand the plot.

"The Island," was sued for ripping off "Parts: The Clonus Horror," and "Parts..." won a huge settlement. The premise of both center around young clones being bred on a sort of Human Farm. The organs of which could be used on their aging adult Originals. In a sense, I guess one could see this as "Paying for life extension." But the Originals continue to age physically.

"Logan's Run," tells of a society that made laws in order to curb over-population; being that they had limited living space. The people did not stop aging, but were made [strongly urged] to Renew at Carousel by thirty. Essentially sending them to A Better Place at just the right time- with a loose promise that they might be reborn. If one chose not to do this ceremony, one had to "Run" at risk of being hunted down and killed. This option could extend one's life... but if one was found and exterminated, one lost the benefits of Carousel. So, as with the fore-mentioned films, these characters physically aged- and there was no option to pay for a life extension.

I completely understand that film makers borrow ideas all the time. They seem to feel it is alright as long as they put their own twist on it. There is so little originality left, and that's sad. But it's wonderful when it entertainingly happens! And I really wish the Reboot concept would never have reared its' ugly head. Re-makes, are OK, as long as credit is given where it is deserved. And just because two movies share the same ideas, does not necessarily make them knock-offs. They are still separate entities.

In conclusion; "Island," and "Parts...," are identical, but, in my opinion, have little to do with "In Time." "Logan's Run," may have inspired "Parts...," and thusly "Island;" but I don't think they should necessarily be credited as more than a spark.

In fact, the film "Looper," could be indebted to "Logan's Run." When a Looper closes his loop, he LIVES IT UP because he realizes he will die in exactly 30 years from that moment. Much like the whole society in "Logan's Run," because they know they only have until the age of 30!

"Reality is only what we TELL each other it is." John Carpenter's "In The Mouth of Madness."
