What was with that? we see him holding his friend from falling, was that real, or what?

Yes it was, and it gave him a "déjà vu" sensation that triggered the trauma (i think).

I thought that not showing whether his friend fell or was saved was a bit of unneeded ambiguity on the part of the filmmaker. It almost screamed "ooh, we'll do a homage to VERTIGO and cut away from this scene with someone hanging over a big drop for dear life..."

I mostly liked the film, but it used tricky manipulation throughout way too much to cover up what was basically a thin conceit.

This is very hard to read, isn't it?

i thought the film was ok, not great, and i agree there was a lot of tricky manipulation going on , but it wouldnt of worked without it.
