This movie is going to be...

...so bad. Don't get me wrong, Cameron's done wonders in the past, for nearly all movies he has been involved with, but having a sequel ten years after the original... does not always work, and not just one sequel but 4 more. Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5 are all slated to appear in the 2020-2029 decade.

I read that a lot. What really surprises me is how much of it seems to come from people who were fans of the first Avatar. I'm not looking forward to these sequels at all, but I didn't like Avatar, so my opinion is going to be biased.

reply

That's exactly it. I really enjoyed Avatar and it is indeed a gem, but I'm afraid so many sequels might mess up what was a good thing. I hope I'm wrong.

Now that I think about it, Cameron did do a great job with the first Terminator sequel. T2 was the best Terminator sequel and one of the better examples of sequel making in general. Cause for optimism!

Aliens was also a fine sequel...obviously Cameron went a very different direction from the original, but it worked beautifully at the time and was one of the better examples of sequels to this date. Much like you...I was just not an avatar fan so I have zero interest in its follow ups, but I'm sure Cameron will deliver a product that will please fans of the franchise.

Yeah, I don't feel like the 1st film was a masterpiece. Technically, yes, but storytelling wise it was pretty blah. I see it as James Cameron's version of a Disney movie. When I look at it from that perspective, its pretty good.

4 additional films are excessive. 2 more to complete a trilogy would be fine. Also Sam Worthington is so boring as a lead. The 1st film was enjoyable despite him. If he were to do a couple more set in the same continuity on the same planet from the POV of different characters, I'd be much more excited.

It's sort of like the billion dollar Marvel studio franchise. It was fairly awesome for a few movies (Avengers 1, Iron Man 1, etc.) but has now become more or less repetitive expensive computer generated green screen eye-candy. Avatar 1 was/is visually impressive, but the storyline was kind of lame, pretty much a cartoon version of Dances With Wolves.

Yeah...we all dread another retelling of Native American history.

What’s next?

Wounded Knee?

The Battle of the Little Big Horn?

The Last of the frickin’ Mohicans?
