No threat, no build-up.

**SPOILERS BELOW**

The first 20 minutes were good, I liked what had changed since the first movie.

However, felt that no characters had any development at all. The president's daughter, for instance, she was an integral part of the first movie when her mother passed away. Here, just a token character who could have been anyone. Captain Hiller also. Instead we got Mr Hemsworth thrown at us with the usual BS "everyone doesn't like me" bad boy act.

Are people kicked out of the fighter pilot squad beyond age 24? It was like children fighting aliens.

They also tried to do another big speech, and it was just building up nicely before, bosh, done, nothing.

Then there's the aliens themselves...

This one's bigger, badder and more advanced - so why is it a million times less scary than the first?

And also, why does the ship tear the planet apart upon it's arrival and not tear the planet apart when it leaves the atmosphere? Because lazy.

I didn't care about any of the characters here. Not even the bus-load of school kids. The death of the president, when compared to the death of Russell the crazy pilot in the first movie, it's just absolutely surreal how little meaning it has on the audience.

Surely they won't make a third?

Have to agree. The lack of tension was a big letdown.

Overall I wasn't opposed to the idea, and with better execution I think it could have been good. It probably needed closer to 3 hrs run time (unfeasible) to establish the characters better. And frankly they could have lost Dylan's mum and David's dad's B stories to facilitate more of this.

The mystery of the image in the prequel novel was pretty compelling. Too bad that didn't translate.

God I hope not. I'm optimistic that given the poor box office performance and even worse reviews, they're done with this franchise. But I've been very, very wrong about this before! (*COUGHBlair Witch (2016)COUGH*)

I do agree with your entire post though. The first act of the original movie was great about setting up all the pieces like the game of chess that Jeff Goldblum kept referencing - meticulous placement of the alien ships, relatively straightforward exposition that the ships are communicating with the radio signals, etc. - and the sequel had none of that.
