Do fighter pilots usually go "AHHHHHHH" when they're shooting?

I noticed it a few times in this, and when the turbo boost or whatever was being used. Is shouting "AHHHHH" going to make them shoot more accurately or something?

reply

Just sort of verbalizing emotion, I would guess. Kind of like a tennis player yelling or grunting when they hit the ball.

reply

In tennis they are athletes though doing physical activity. It's a little more understandable while people are exercising and using every sinew in their arms to swing at a ball. Whereas this film would be more comparable to someone going "AHHHHH" while playing Call of Duty, which is a little strange if you ask me. And they would be everyday people sitting around in the comfort of their own homes, not professionals like these fighter pilots.

You heard it on IMDB folks. Fighter pilots are NOT doing physical activity. That's right, flying in machines made to fly at any angle at Mach+ speeds is same as playing COD sitting down on a couch.

Amazing.

reply

That's not quite what I said now, is it? For fighter pilots who are conditioned to the effects of Mach speeds, they're not exactly doing the same continual physical activity with their bodies that tennis players are during rallies are they? I mean you're welcome to show me any point in this film where any of the pilots look out of breath while sitting in their fighter jets?

You DO realize that pilots in this movie are fictional, right?

Also, people can be "out of breath" when body goes through different forces, including speed and gravity. You don't have to be running on the ground to be out of breath. Some people are out of breath from laughing too much only.

reply

OP thinks professional race car drivers or fighter pilots wouldn't be out of breath controlling their vehicles and there's no exerted force at all, and their experiences would be exactly like that of a CoD player sitting in front of a computer.

Real pilots yell out "Ahhhhh!" and "Yee-Haaah!" all the time, but they always announce their call sign first. Clearly these writers need to do their homework.

reply

I think you miss my point. I'm not saying pilots do not get out of breath. Of course they do. For the actions they were engaging in while flying at the times of going "AHHHHHH", there was no cause to be out of breath, so it really would be comparable to handling a joystick and shouting at those moments. The girl pilot shouting "AHHHHHH" when shooting at the queen alien was one of the more absurd things in this *beep* movie filled with absurd things.

reply

Part of any fighter pilot's training is to avoid this kind of emotional activity. This movie was absurd in so many way.

DBLurker is right. Factor in the adrenaline rush and the fact they are potentially facing death at any moment and it could just be a natural reaction.

reply

Nonsense, he is dead wrong. In a situation like that you are totally concentrated and focused on your task. It is only in the entertainment industry that that's normal behaviour, and they get away with it because people are morons who think people behave like in the movies.

reply

It's just the usual ridiculousness we find in these kind of movies, highly skilled and trained fighter pilots will be so focused the last thing they'd be doing would be shouting "Ahhh!" or "Take that!" It's the same kind of nonsense as expecting us to believe a multi billion dollar space program designed to protect the Earth from hostiles would employ wise-cracking smart ass astronauts who occasionally steal ships to visit their girlfriends.

That's typical in action scenes these days, haven't you noticed? It is catering to morons. And this is just a stupid popcorn flick so of course that had to happen. Doesn't matter if you shoot with a plane or with your assault rifle, in a movie like this you have to scream in pivotal and intense moments cause movie producers think that just shooting isn't enough and that the audience are morons who think that's natural behaviour. As is evident in this thread, there actually are morons like that out there, who believes real life fighter pilots are sitting screaming their lungs off when they are shooting in combat.

reply

I guess the other alternatives, were to make machine gun sounds, or go 'pew-pew-pew.'

"Thanks, guys." "So long, partner."

Yes, people in combat do often yell all kinds of weird stuff.

ID2 is hardly alone in that particular practice. Heck, even the much loved original "Independence Day" was guilty of it on several occasions, especially when it came to Steve- who, whether you lot like it or not, is rather like Jake from the sequel. A cocky, hotshot maverick like that isn't so likely to pull by-the-book Danger Deadpan, however accurate it would be to real life, simply because they're too busy flipping said danger off, regardless of the the threat level. Character archetype and all.
