Dr. Isaac was supposed to be Okun's boyfriend?

I just read this in the trivia. I didn't get that from the movie at all. I thought it was just a "bromance" between two nutty scientists.

If they were supposed to be a couple, the movie did a piss-poor job of establishing it, which makes my opinion of the film even lower than it already was.

I was already annoyed at the poor execution and lack of drama in Dr. Isaac's death scene, but if they were supposed to be a couple, then the mishandling of that scene is even more annoying.

Only in the last scene was it made evident in any way that they were a couple. Before that, they were just a pair of scientists. That extra bit of bromance thrown in at the end felt so shoehorned and clunky that it was just bad... just like the rest of the movie. Just. Bad.

This film and Star Trek Beyond BOTH made pre-existing characters homosexual for the sake of being progressive and normalizing homosexuality.

I am all for that. That's great.

What's not great is when they puss-out and refuse to show enough intimacy to firmly establish that they're gay.

Sulu's officially gay now. Awesome. But they cut the shot where he kisses his husband. Wimps.

So no, I'm not homophobic. I'm mad that this movie did a poor job of establishing the gay relationship, not about the relationship itself.

They kept calling each other babe in the movie. I knew they were a couple before he even woke up from his coma. I certainly wouldn't spend 20 years taking care of a coworker in coma, obviously he loved him.

reply

I guess I missed the babe... or took it as a bromantic joke.

Well technically an abnormality/defect accounting for a scant 1.7% of the populace (per the CDC) cannot be normalized by its very nature. The societies/movements that pretend normalcy are temporary and regional and globally is already moving back to self-correct despite pockets in the west. So while I guess its fine to help the ADA aspects of an audience to enrich to suspense of disbelief, couldn't it just be a bad movie without making it worse?

"Obamacare: It only works if you don't!"

reply

If its a defect that only effects a small number of people, then why is it so important for you to fight against those people? Its not contagious and the defect doesn't go away by society being hostile to them.

I agree it was somewhat soft-pedalled, Necrotard.

My own suspicion is that Emmerich was probably limited in how overt he could make their relationship, with the studio not wanting to see it labelled a "gay" movie.

Dr Isaac's death scene should have been touching, at least, and it just ... wasn't.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

To be honest, I didn't realize it either until I looked it up. I just thought Dr. Isaacs was his doctor during his comatose state and when Okun woke up, he was in such a confused state that he thought Isaacs was a former (female) lover or something.

They're here, they're queer, get used to it.

They kept calling eachother "babe" or "baby". Also, one of them was obsessed with the other guy's ass.

I literally didn't know until I read this thread. I didn't get that at all from the film.

Never been a gangsta but I play hardball.

didn't see it either. Now I know their last scence was at least horrible for a reason.
