I doubt there will be a third one.

With how badly this one did in the box office I can't imagine they'll bother with a third one.

Which is sad, because even though this one wasn't that great I still would've loved to see the conclusion to the trilogy. I bet the final space battle between earth and the aliens would've been badass.

You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance.

Maybe in another 20 years when they recycle even more movies. They'll restart from the beginning and try for a franchise.

I too don't expect there to be a third film. Something tells me that the studio has had no discussions once they realized people hated it. I don't expect the studio to make any announcement that they shelved it, which is how studios typically handle this kind of situation, but I do expect to eventually read an article that points out the fact that there is no third film scheduled. Roland is a hack of a director.

They're pushing the home video releases pretty heavily -- maybe the revenue from those will get it over the profit line. (Though if the studio wants a write-off, of course, it can keep this one red-lined no matter how much revenue it pulls in.)

For me, there's a double-whammy if this fails: Emmerich was also counting on the success of these sequels to pave the way for his Stargate reboot. I notice that for now, Stargate has disappeared from his projects list here on IMDb.

I think there's some irony in the thought that, if he does get to make the third film, we'll essentially get the Emmerich version of the Alien 5 film people have been clamouring for, for years -- Earth taking the war to the Alien home planet. I do hope we get to see it; Emmerich's scripts are just getting worse as the years go on, but (imo) he's still one of the best at balancing CGI with live action.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

A lot depends on the international market. It bombed here in the US, but if it does better elsewhere (especially in a certain market the movie was clearly courting) that may be enough to give us Part 3. Roland needs to redeem himself in the eyes of the studio, that's probably why the Stargate reboot is on hold for the time being. If you're going to greenlight a massive budget you need to have confidence in your director to deliver the goods - and I think that confidence has taken a hit.

Critical reaction counts a lot for movies these days and it's been widely panned. That alone could prevent a sequel.

Critical reaction counts a lot for movies these days ...

If Resurgence had gotten the kind of box office numbers they were projecting, all the bad reviews in the world wouldn't have stopped them from instantly going forward with ID 3. Studios have never thought twice about subjecting us to endless cookie-cutter sequels as long as they keep earning money. It's a lack of profitability that kills movies, not film critics.

You're being too kind, because the truth is they blasted this film with both barrels. Usually audiences are a little kinder to a film that critics hate, but not this movie.

This movie still turned a 50 million dollar profit

Chump change when you consider that the original had over $600 million in profit at the box office.

I often laugh how some people talk up a film as a massive hit even if it just barely made back the money invested.

IDR made no profit in the US, and the income from overseas was tenuous at best.

I saw this film in theaters back in June and I am not even sure how it would even continue. I thought it was kind of "meh," but I can't see the story continuing, despite the ending talking about having an interstellar resistance group.

lord I hope not

I don't know how many actors would want to continue

It did poorly because it was a slapped together mess. I can see why Will Smith wouldn't touch it.
