Harry Turtledove's Worldwar novels

A World of the Worlds/Independence Day type of scenario, which turns into a long drawn out epic yet works as an engaging franchise (for the most part), can be found in the Worldwar series of 8 novels by Harry Turtledove. The view of the invasion, which includes at least a dozen scenes of Emmerich style city destructions, switches constantly between various human and alien characters, who all have personality ups and downs and conflicting agendas a la Game of Thrones. Even the alien grand admiral, who orders another iconic city destruction at the drop of a hat every few chapters, and would be the prototypical archvillain in any Hollywood sci fi blockbuster, is quite a sympathetic character. The series also has a Forrest Gump aspect, as many of the human characters are mid-20th century historical figures, with the viewpoint narrators including Vyacheslav Molotov, General Leslie Groves, and Mordechai Anielewicz (the character played by Hank Azaria in Uprising [2001]).

The novels are as follows:

1. In the Balance
2. Tilting the Balance
3. Upsetting the Balance
4. Striking the Balance
5. Second Contact
6. Down to Earth
7. Aftershocks
8. Homeward Bound

IMHO, the Worldwar novels are completely unfilmable.
