They reported back to central command as to how close the big drill-laser was to the Earth's molten core. They were the eyes for the International Government, letting them know how much time was left, so they could keep the military forces informed with their '12 mins left, 6 mins left, 4 mins left, 2 mins left' countdown. Now, how the boat crew had this information, I have no idea (they're about to salvage a ship on the bottom of the ocean... which is a very long way from the core, and I imagine uses very different tech than would be used to determine if an alien-drill-laser has reached the molten core of our planet. *But you never know.)

*Actually wait, I do know. It's completely absurd. Like the rest of the film's logic.

Exactly how would a random salvage vessel have the technology to monitor the progress of an alien ship drilling a huge hole into the core of the Earth. LOL
I guess when they ordered the boat from the builder they asked for the very specific Alien Drilling to Core of Earth monitoring package. Just in case?

reply

Yes. It was a $50 million equipment option for their boat, but the captain was like 'Alien drill monitoring gear? Meh. I'll take it just in case.'

When he said $100 million, he was just tying to double his money because #capitalism.

Thankfully, those guys were there, otherwise nobody would have known we came to total *annihilation.

*outside of the big ship that landed on Earth with enough mass to throw the planet off its axis and orbit, as well as the moon which governs our tides. Or the 10 story alien queen stomping its way through the desert to get the Apple iBall of Information.
