Perfectly nails life as a single !

The pre-opening credit sequence MASTERFULLY depicts life as a thirtysomething single (guy or girl) ! This is the second time that Reitman offers us shallow and aimless 30 or 40 single characters (Theron here, George Clooney in UP IN THE AIR) and he totally NAILS it !

Definitely...although I do realize this may be stupid...but one thing that felt odd was the birth announcement via email. Do people still do that? Isn't facebook pretty much the preferred media for crap like that? Petty, maybe, I know...but it sort of took the reality out of it when the news came as an email and not on her facebook wall.

reply

Yes people still e-mail announcements. People still snail mail announcements!

Considering that Mavis wasn't exactly friends with Buddy any longer, why would they be facebook friends? (Or Beth and Mavis for that matter?)

reply

This was pretty accurate. I'm a married man with 2 kids, and when my kids were born, I sent out a mass e-mail announcement to many people to lots of people, friends or not, who I happened to have e-mail addresses for...this was pre-facebook though. But chances are, I would probably be a facebook friend with somebody like Mavis, who I may or may not have dated back in high school, so it's not uncommon for someone like her to receive a birth announcement from an old distant friend.

reply

Yeah, I don't understand what part of this is so hard for many here to understand. Some think there was some "evil" motive in sending the pics. Ridiculous! When people have babies, they shout it from the rooftops...that includes sending email pics to just about everybody in existence. It's human nature, and there is nothing evil about it.

Beth was a psycho. She and Mavis weren't friends in high school, why send her husband's ex, who lived together in college, a birth announcement 20 years after high school?

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

reply

"Beth was a psycho."

You're in the wrong place. You must be thinking of some other Beth in some other movie. The Beth in this movie was a nice woman who was treated like total shit by the protagonist, who was mentally ill.

reply

But it was Beth who sent it. I doubt Beth and Mavis were friends in high school.

It's doubtful Beth and Mavis would be FB friends. It's doubtful Mavis would be FB friends with anyone from high school. Part of this story is that Beth is a psycho beyotch. She was the one who sent the announcement, and it was only addressed to Mavis, she sent her drunk husband home with is ex, even though "we ALL know why you're [Mavis} here" and it was Beth who insisted Mavis be invited to the baby naming. All 20 years after high school.

I don't have Facebook. I opened one briefly about 4 years ago, but got bored quick and closed it. Also, I couldn't locate any of the main people I was interested in finding. It was almost as if all the people I was interested in were/are too cool or have much more important things going for them than to be on Facebook. I always got the sense that a lot of people are on Facebook to brag or pretend that their lives are way better than they are. I'm not interested in every little aspect of someone's life. I don't understand why anybody has FB now. It seems so outdated. But that's just me.

Email is superior to Facebook. Email is the most efficient method of communication ever invented.

You can be a shallow and aimless 30 or 40 something single and not be a mess, too.

But her life WAS a mess. She had a miscarriage when she was 20 that damaged her "southern parts" so she couldn't have kids, her husband divorced her and she was just about to lose her job. And she was an alcoholic. Mavis is one messed up woman.

And you can be single, not shallow and aimless, and not a mess. Just saying.

She'd been a mess for a long time. Her hair pulling probably started in high school, at least (notice how her dad asked if she was still doing that?) She was out back of the school have sex with the guys.

Don't forget Mavis was married and wasn't always single. Apparently she was the same person in marriage (her parents saying he was a nice guy). Self-Absorbtion, narcissism & Alcoholism isn't limited to singles. Married & single, Mavis was messed up.

I've only been to Minnesota twice in my life (to meet an ex-girlfriend's family) and her folks were almost EXACTLY like Mav's parents. It was scary.
