This is not a good movie.

It is nowhere near.

How are critics rating this good? Because it has a non-conventional ending? That makes it worthy of praise? NO. This is the biggest peice of *beep* to come out of the cinema in a while. Unfortunately, in modern times, there's more and more of these *beep* films making an appearance. When this script was written and handed in by Cody, it should have been shredded right there and then.

You want a good film? Here's some:
To Kill A Mockingbird
Changeling
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Some Like It Hot

This is so terrible, i laugh at the prospect of it recieving good reviews. What's to like? It's trash, there's no real quality to it at ALL.
Firstly, the main girl. I can't even remember the name of the characters, they're so unforgettable and horrid. But Theron's character was dreadful, so unlikable, and i don't care if "that's how it was supposed to be." No, it's too much of a risk to make your main character unlikeable. Very few people can get away with it, you have to place them in the right situation, and Cody does not. She fails completely with this.
Secondly, Cody needs to go and read the conventional arc of storytelling all over again before she makes another movie. The guy that Theron wanted to be with, he was a one-dimensional character who i didn't give a hoot about. The guy that liked her, the one that was her companion throughout the flick, the cripped guy - he was as bland as a doorknob. He was clearly there just to provide some sense of humanity to the story, to be the somewhat-twisted but moral compass, but it didn't work. The baby naming party or whatever the hell it was, was a complete and total anti-climax. "*beep* YOU," She screams, "*beep* YOU!" Yeah, that's GREAT writing right there.
There was so many stupid, stupid moments. And the ONE possibly redeeming aspect was the cripple guy; if they had purely remained platonic but LEARNED something from him, then i would have actually given it some credit. But because she got rejected, she goes and initates sex with him. UGH. I thought you were going for unoriginal, Cody? CLICHE ALERT.

Then wtf was the end? The dude's sister as a 2 min chat to her, Theron acts like a bitch to her before walking out and leaving, finishing her last chapter. Which was lame as all hell.

So, wait. Her and the cripple guy. No redeemption. No closing between them. Nothing. She wakes up and leaves.

Her and her parents. Major WTF.

Her and Beth and the guy. Nothing. Party is the last time she sees them.

WHAT IS GOOD ABOUT THIS FLICK?! SOMEONE TELL ME?

We're not watching a reality show, we're watching a MOVIE. Either give us a refreshing ending, or a somewhat happy or (if sad) justified one, otherwise get lost. If i had actually spent money on this, I would have been furious. Luckily i watched it at a friend's place.

It's not realistic, it's just plain silly. No character is likeable, there is no quality to them, there is no conclusion to any of their stories. It ends where it starts. Characters need to learn, to evolve, even somewhat. She doesn't.

It's a horrible, horrible movie. I sat there, after the credits, wondering how the hell this got past pre-production. This has to be a joke.

Given the rambling, barely literate nature of your OP, I'm confident no amount of articulation could ever penetrate your skull. Welcome to your minority opinion.

Sorry, cupcake, but citing favorable critical consensus always carries more weight than your inarticulate "I'm right".

I'll take the flip side and say this IS a good movie.

I love it when people see a highly rated movie on IMDB and then procede to go on a rant on why they think it sucks like they are some sort of elitist snob.

reply

So 6.5 is highly rated? The elitist snobs are usually the ones who criticize those who criticize the films. "Young Adult" isn't a comedy, dark or otherwise. The fact that there are a small handful of mildly humorous moments doesn't qualify the film as a comedy. This is among the more dull and empty films I've viewed in a long time. There is nothing intriguing about any of the characters, and Charlize's character comes off as selfish and entitled. I would not recommend this film.

Having read the script, ur girl, I have to tell you a lot of dialog and scenes were cut out. The script had flashbacks from high school and scenes from the book Mavis wrote. I was let down by the bland relationships sans nudity and the obvious chance Buddy could have used to meet Mavis secretly without leaving Beth. The dialogue in the script was realistic, but the film changed to long worded phrases.

arcadiafan writes:
"...the obvious chance Buddy could have used to meet Mavis secretly without leaving Beth."

And what does this tell us?

Buddy no longer loved Mavis. He was just being nice or felt sorry for her. And he was a man who wouldn't take advantage of this "obvious chance" because he was in love with Beth and cherished his new baby.

"I think it's time to see Amanda sticking guns in people's faces."

reply

well i thought the acting were good, including Theron, but then her character is such a total bitch.
i wouldn't exactly say it's horrible, but it's boring for sure.
and to read some people say it's a comedy? gee, some weird humour...

reply

I thought the acting was good but, every character was pretty two-dimensional.Plus, it wasn't even funny or witty.

A plague on all your houses!!!!

That's where I just shrugged my shoulders and considered this whingeing post lacked any serious attention. Such hyperbole tends to suggest an immature mind with opinions not worth serious consideration. Seriously, try a measured approach to criticism if you're going to damn a film, rather than come off as some young adult trying to prove yourself to be serious when you're anything but that...

Anyway, it seems to me from the teenage styled ramblings of your post that you want a nice Hollywood tied-up ending with likeable characters (and I bet you want some good ol' moral lessons, too). Try Twilight and its ilk for that sort of thing.

Right, because an overly-judgmental, ad hominem-laden reply is so much more mature. Had you only written, "Seriously, try a measured approach to criticism if you're going to damn a film," and left the rest out, then you wouldn't have sounded so whingeing yourself, SoggyBiscuits.

Aww... I'm sorry that you've thrown your toys out of your pram. Maybe someone else can pick them up for you, diddums.

Would you have liked a patronising voice-over to fill in the bits you should be able to fill in for yourself?

reply

It was a ok moive for me. Not great or bad just kinda in between. It was not my cup of tea but It was far from a bad movie.

Biggest piece of *beep* movie I've seen in a long time. So bad I can't even be bothered going into the myriad reasons why. I only went to see it 'cause Patton Oswalt's in it and even that wasn't worth it. To top it off, when I got to my parked car afterwards there was a $105 parking fine waiting to greet me.

That which doesn't kill me just makes me think *beep* it didn't kill me.

[deleted]

If a Patton Oswalt fan didn't like it how could it be any good?

reply

I thought there was nothing in life that Patton couldn't make enjoyable. But I was wrong in this case.
