Awkwardly hard to watch scene

The baby naming party scene was truly one of the hardest and most painful scenes to watch. Just something about someone so deluded and crazy facing harsh reality that hurts to see someone go through. I don't feel bad for the character, because she created all her own problems, but I certainly do not enjoy seeing anyone go through an experience like that. I am pretty sure the writer wanted exactly that to happen in the scene, and that's understandable. Charlize sure did a great job of making me very uncomfortable.

I know I shouldn't be looking at the message boards while I'm watching the movie but this scene is about to start and I don't know if I can watch it! LOL I hate uncomfortable scenes!!!!

I couldn't look at the screen too...
and I wet my eyes a little at that baby naming scene and when Mavis undressed in Matt's room..

I could watch the train wreck because it was fascinating. What a freakin mess of a person! Don't feel one bit sorry for her. Wish they would've ripped her a new one! Okay, I know that's harsh and she needed help but how can you be so blind!

I don't really know what to think of the movie. Thank goodness for Patton Oswalt's character.

When she admitted in front of everyone that she had "Buddy's miscarriage" it sounds like they were planning a future together but it went downhill. So now she views his wife as having what she "should" have had. Kind of pitiful when you think about it.

So I felt it was in bad taste to send the picture originally let alone invite her to the party. She's no angel but they were rubbing her nose in it ..yea?

To me what made it awkward was that his wife was so nice to her and her own parents were there. If this was real life do you think her and Patton would have kept in touch? PS does KSU mean Kansas State?

Yes, I went to K-State when I created this sign on at least 10 years ago. But I ended up at Wichita State. Go shockers! :-)

Omg, so many awkwardly hard to watch scenes but the movie was good, Charlize did great, and it makes me cringe to think that people and situations like this really exist and happen! The movie made you sensitive to the sadness of it, shocked, embarrassed, but laugh and hope for them as well.

Wow Megan4KSu, that's kind of harsh saying you don't feel one bit sorry for Mavis after watching that scene. You're supposed to finally have some insight into why her character is behaving the way she does throughout the movie. Everybody else here already explained it really well though. I dunno, it's called "empathy."

Mavis is beyond redemption. The next step is suicide for her unless she can do something drastic to help herself. She was terrible for messing up the party. So I don't feel sorry for her.

suicide? comeon. id like to think that party and subsequent sleeping with matt aftwards was her rock bottom and she would finally get better and not deal with her depression in the same way.

but yes that scene was incredibly difficult to watch but it was amazing to see theron pull it off.

the only thing that was weird for me was to see mavis' parents there. why would they be there in the first place? maybe it was truly a small town.

No, she isn't going to change. That is the whole point of Sandra's speech, and another reason I love the end. She doesn't have some lame epiphany and go through a Hollywood type of transformation, where she suddenly becomes a good person. She is the popular high school girl for life, and will just continue on in her alcoholic, bitchy ways. I think the one thing she did learn though is to forget Buddy, and just Mercury in general.

Yes. I guess we have to compliment the director because it wasn't over the top but it was painful to watch for me as well.

I know it might seem crazy but when ever they showed her pulling out her hair. Right from the beginning scene I knew that was what she was doing, and I hate when people do that..like NO!!! Just stop! please.
