Anybody else out there struggle with Mila Kunis as the Wicked Witch?

I don't want to hack on Mila Kunis too much, as I've enjoyed her in other stuff. The role of the Wicked Witch of the West is so iconic, though, and every-time she started spitting venom, all I could hear was Meg mad at Peter Griffin. Really derailed a crucial part of it, for me.

Here's my quick, spoiler free review of the film.

Yeah, I wasn't impressed by her performance as the Wicked Witch of the West. She was fine before the transformation, but I found it hard to take her seriously after the transformation.

She was fine as Theodora but as the WWW, her voice was way off.

Yep.

I totally agree, not convinced at all by her performance. It all just got a bit too shouty. I don't feel there was enough light and shade to her performance as the wicked with, which even the most evil or sinister character should have.

That really does sound more like an issue with the script then. Whilst I very much so liked this film the biggest issue it has is once she becomes The Wicked Witch she becomes one note. Hopefully in the planned sequel that changes.

Mila was awesome. Theodorah was the best character in the movie.

Unfortunately, Mila did almost sink the whole movie. She isn't a strong actress. This can be seen in almost every one of her recent movies, most disturbing is Jupiter Ascending, a disastrous acting debacle. The make up as the witch was truly terrible-looked like a really bad mask.
Rachel Weisz is the only one who does decent work here. Even Williams was weak and that is very rare for an actress of her caliber!

we all have to say no

SOMEONE with real taste posts TRUTH ;) Agree 100%

The biggest issue wasn't Mila, it was the attorneys hell bent on making sure that witch was NOT the Hamilton icon.

reply

She could have tried her hardest no one can top Hamilton.

reply

The issue was the attorneys? You mean...the issue was following the law, a law that pretty much exists for DISNEY's benefit? Can't really feel sorry or blame the law they themselves pushed to extend. And a good actress could have given a good witch performance without mimicking Hamilton. Mila just didn't though.

I was hearing Jackie yelling at Kelso.

"... and I am unanimous in that!"- Mrs. Slocombe

I think she suffered from bad writing - the character was too underdeveloped - but she didn't do a good job. It's probably because the Wicked Witch of the West is famous for being hammy - which was right in line with the acting style back then, but not so good now. It's like when Rebecca Mader plays the witch on Once Upon A Time. She struggles with hamming it up, but does a better job at making her more sinister and mocking

The biggest problem I had with the Wicked Witch of the West in this movie, was that she was far too HOT. She was supposed to be ugly; not baby-smooth faced and showing cleave!

Well it was the wicked witch in her younger days, not something like 35 years later, when Dorothy arrives and meets the "Senior Wicked Witch of the West", who now looks like the kind of old hag, that you expect a wicked witch to look like.

all she effing did was scream every line after she turned evil --where did the actual acting go? there was so much she could have done with that character. how did the director allow that to slide by? if i were the director i would have been like "Mila... wtf are you doing... No...stop ruining this role and ruining most of the movie by shouting EVERYTHING and add some range and layers to your character or you're fired as *beep* Thanks."

reply

When she told Oz "I hate you!" at the end, I just thought of Meg yelling at Peter or Chris too.
