I was there
I was almost old enough to vote for JFK in 1960, and well remember 11/22/1963. Not until 9-11 would there be another day that would so shell shock America. A lot of what we now take as the Kennedy myth did not exist in 1963. The same people who thought Jackie was the embodiment of culture and class now say the same thing about Michelle Obama. The whole story of "Camelot" was made up by Jackie in the days following the assassination. I don't blame her. I think she loved her husband, cad though he was, and she wanted to immortalize him like no American had been before. In 1963 many regarded Jackie as an attractive but vacuous clothes horse with a little girl's wispy voice. But, she deserves great credit for holding it together in the days immediately after the 22nd. Her marriage to Onassis cost her a lot of credibility and popularity which she only re-gained after his death.
