Natalie Portman, Get That Oscar Girl!
I just got home from watching both La La Land (7 pm) then Jackie (9:30 pm) back to back, and boy oh boy did I enjoy both.
"La La Land" was magical, breathtaking and just amazing. I loved it so much, and by love i do mean LOVE. I loved Gosling in it (and I am not his biggest fan), loved the script, the songs, the cinematography, the editing, but most of all Emma Stone. She was delightful, endearing, charming, and all around ADORABLE (for the most part. Her character rubbed me the wrong way a few times). She put her all into that performance and she is strong.
However...
Natalie Portman gives a much stronger performance in "Jackie". She STUNS and brings an honesty to the role that few other actresses that played the iconic former First Lady have. She was just so beautiful in this role. Every line that came out of her mouth felt real, and she nailed the mannerisms of Jackie O. The film as a whole is not amazing, its good, but it focuses solely on Jackie right after her husband is killed. You are not looking at Jackies entire life or even when she became Jackie O, but just looking at that small time frame. I enjoyed it, but mainly for the wonderful performances in it. I am actually shocked Peter Sarsgaard is not getting more attention in his supporting role. He was far better than some of the men that are getting nominated in the category. He gave such a strong, straight faced performance and was incredible in scenes where he had to show emotion etc. He deserves a nod, but for some reason no one has paid him any attention.
I do hope Natalie Portman wins that award, as she gave an ALMOST flawless performance. My only gripe with her performance was her "accent" (or the way Jackie spoke) would come in and out at moments. She maintained it for the most part but there were moments you heard her struggle with it, mainly when she had to get really tough or cry a lot.
Please, go see "Jackie" and "La La Land".
La La Land is the better, bigger movie but Natalie Portman gave the better, bigger performance and is just so stunning in this. She would just sit in silence at times and you knew every emotion she felt by looking at her face, never a moment of dead eyes (looking at you J Law) and she keeps you intrigued.
