I really enjoyed this film I thought it was startling creepy at times and the remarkable score had a haunting tone.

Exchanges between Portman and John Hurt were lovely and exceptional in equal measure but the squawking and cheeping in the BG courtesy of parakeets was off putting.

A friend of mine noticed this too, and even told me it was an error because the parakeets don't live in the US. (The film was shot in France, I believe, with a milder climate; escaped or released parakeets are capable of surviving here.)

I never noticed, not even upon second viewing. If I see it a third time I'll pay attention to it.
