I took my 9 year old grandson to go see it and we both enjoyed the movie. I've never read the book, so I went in with out any expectations.
Not sure why it's getting such negative reviews - it's just a fun kids movie.
That was my experience as well. I've never read the book, but my two sons wanted to see it so I took them. They both enjoyed it, and I wasn't bored by it. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it tells a funny story that children can enjoy at a pace that never gets tiresome.
